This book has a great glossary at the back with a definition of lots of ancient ingredients:

If it's only for tool handles & garden tools, why not just use either BLO or LO? After all, it's not like ur talking about a dining table top!

...but why talk about the simple, obvious option when there's a new exotic alternative?

Damar (not mastic which it seems has become expensive), dissolved in turps and added to BLO, LO or any number of drying oils is a fairly simple way of making a harder wearing, nicer smelling oil finish. There's no real reason for anyone to change their regime or habits but if you get up one morning and put your shoes on before your pants and decide it suits you, give it a whirl.
...I'll just make the other bits smaller.
