Ian,
at the moment im just using twine as the cord but can see it wont last too long before a change is needed.
as for the blades you mentioned, it seems that alot of the bandsaw blades listed are for metal and i know there are wood ones as well, but are the fine metal ones really suitable for wood ie for dovetailing or finer work
regards
shippers

Shippers, there is an almost infinite variety of sizes, pitches and tooth profiles in wood-cutting blades. Not all at the one place, though. I would not try metal blades, they would be too hard to file (and you're going to need to sharpen them, eventually). I've made a rip blade from some very aggressive 1/2" "Woodpecker" stock, and others from more conventional-looking tooth patterns, over the years. Seems like every time I go to buy new blades, there is a new style & the old style I'd got used to has disappeared!
Cheers,IW

I bought a couple of dozen metre roll of leather thonging (the stuff bikies edge their leathers with) from a leather shop to use for tensioning. I use 8 loops and it works very well. An alternative is a threaded rod which also works very well.
I have used pieces cut from broken metal cutting bandsaw blades from work. The usually still have plenty of set and I just toss them out when they go blunt and cut off another piece. The hardest think is drilling hole in them. I use a touched up masonry bit, lots lube, and slower than normal drill speed.

I have also heard of guys using braided fishing line.
Might give that a go, very strong next to no stretch

Hi Shippers,
Carbatec in Melbourne have a lot of BandSaw blades going for $10 each at the moment. I picked up a few in 6, 8, 10, 12, 14,18, 24tpi. They vary in length from 1.4m to 2.4m. 3mm-10mm width.
I think I've got my lifetime supply of bow saw blades. I just need to make a few bow saws now. A few smallish ones, approx 300mm, and a few 600mm. Time will tell.
All the best
Kevin

Nice work shippers! I think a bow saw is a wonderful addition to the tool collection, very useful item.
