Default Old Brace or Brest Brace !

    Hi all,

I purchased this old relic today as I was
intrigued as how well it works and how well it is
made. There is no ID marks as to who made it,
but they may be under the dirt and rust. It holds
the bit in really well and still turns easily. The sweep
handle is made of metal as well. Any idea of the age
of this Brace?. I paid £ 1.00 for it with the bit.20231125_213952.jpg20231125_213956.jpg

    Hi Martin,
In your first photo can be seen that the chuck is designed to hold both square tapered and flat tanged bits which makes me think German or Scandinavian origins. I think they were still making and using flat tanged bits long after the British had finished. Perhaps the breast plate may be a later modification, that's only a guess having never seen one exactly like yours before. You might find a brand once you've cleaned it up.
    Cheers,
    Geoff.
