Thread: Buying hand tools in singapore

Unfortunately or fortunately the last option may prove to be more productive. I posted a similar request last year and had very few replies although on ex pat did reply and said that not much happens there as far as tools go.

He said that when he visits Oz he goes home with a suitcase full of tools. My daughter and S-I-L visit there regularly, in fact she is there now and she did some research for me and visited the hardware district if it could be called that. The problem there is that not much maintenance is done there like here.

Those with the money to spend do not live in houses but in high rise units and apartments and as such do not do any maintenance themselves like we do here. The quality is crap and the prices are expensive for what is dished up. it is the opposite for Electrical goods and entertainment units, where the demand is high,

The plus for there electrical equipment is only the plug needs to be changed which can be done with a universal adapter as they use a similar system as us.

I hope somebody else posts something more encouraging for you because I thought it might be promising but alas not for me.

ps. The hand tools are crap. She bought home a small block plane which I may be able be able to turn the low quality blade into something seeing I am trying to make my own hand tools. It may be able to morph into a scraper.

There is a nice fishing tackle shop up in Changi Village that is reasonably priced. Most of Singapore is expensive but not outlandishly so. As for tools what is said above sums it up, if you can find a place let me know, because I haven't.

Do the tours, wander Orchard Road, enjoy the food especially the smaller street front places which are good quality and inexpensive. Have a look at your shed before you go, you'll find nothing to add to it, and it'll be more interesting than anything you are likely to find.

As others have said, Singapore is not a good source for tools.
But if you like to scratch around in hardware, the Larut Road area, behind Kelantan Road Polyclinic is an interesting doddle. (Google map below)

My advice to you is don’t waste your time. I will be in Hong Kong next week and I don’t expect to find anything there.

Doing Woodwork for pleasure does not exist in Asia. There isn’t a market for it. So why would anyone open a shop full of tools when there is no one to buy them?

Theres also some good fishing tackle shops on Arab Street in amongst the haberdasheries (for some odd reason). But the only tools Ive seen are cheap and nasty chinese stuff.

Thanks for the replies and advice.

Whenever we travel I like to visit the local hardware/tool stores etc and I find it best to have an idea of where to go, quality etc before leaving.

For example in Paris there is a huge hardware store in the basement of the department store near the Hotel de Ville (Town Hall). It's a bit like Bunnings in terms of quality of tools etc. Prices are higher than here in Oz, but they do sell other things like many different sizes of smaller brass screws with slotted heads for fixing hinges and cabinet locks.

I think I will need a few more brass screws with slotted heads (or that will be my excuse) when we are in Paris again in the not too distant future.
