Calling all Lie-Nielsen smoothing plane users
I have the big five-0 coming up later in the year and I'm already getting "What do you want" questions.
I've looked at the Bronze Lie-Nielsen No4 smoothing planes many times, but couldn't bring myself to drop the chaff on one, but now it's someones else's (the whole family) money, it's a different story
My question is - Are they that much better than a Stanley? If you find you have dug yourself a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging.
I just finished child-proofing our house - but they still get inside.

Functionally no better than a well set up Stanley. The LN's won't pay for themselves but they are very nice and they don't want flattening before you use the first time. If you don't have one you should get one.

Only have their adjustable block plane and large scraper plane but they are both great tools. I think they are worth the money just so you can see what a really well setup tool is like, out of the box they just need a quick sharpening and they are ready to go. Haven’t used the scraper a ton as I bought it second hand at a price I couldn’t pass up but the block plane is probably my most used plane overall, absolutely love it.

Adam given that you are a man of importance and great stature I imagine that you holding a Number 4 would look like FenceFurniture holding a number 2 (plane of course)
May I suggest a Bronze 4 1/2?

I second the look of horror.
You may have a point about the size though. If you find you have dug yourself a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging.

I have heard other good reports about the block plane. I have their shooting plane and love it lots.

My LN Block plane is excellent. I have one. I also have a couple of Stanley block planes that I have fettled up and they are nearly as good for a lot less money.
The LN was a gift, and a much loved one. Not sure if I would have spent my money on it, but as a gift it is great.I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.

It's more of a constant shriek

It's the family's pooled money that's buying the tool, so "is it that much better?" should stand well behind "what would I really like?"
A LN Bronze #3 or #4 is not that much better than a well fettled Stanley or Record, but as a 50th present that is not the point.
The family want to get you something that
1. is memorable
2. is recognisable to them when among your other tools
3. you would really want to have
4. you will use with sufficient frequency that you are reminded of their love each time you use it.
5. they can collectively afford.
In my own case, answering those questions took me to a plane by Wayne Anderson.regards from Alberta, Canada

It's a marvelous plane. Better in harder wood (than stanley - or at least easier to use) due to the extra weight if you're smoothing with it. Smooth adjustment, tight fit on everything on it - a very good choice for a gift plane.
