I think it's all been said already, by Ian, Derek and others, but it's interesting to see the variety of saws offered by early makers, for example Wilson in 1772 offered 14 different types of backsaw. But these were variations on a lesser number of basic types, the differences being type of steel, number of screws, partially assembled etc..

    Dovetail 9"
    Sash 14"
    Tenon 19"

By the early 1800's the number of different types of backsaw expands to 50 or 60, with all manner of variations. I can't help but think that this explosion of choices is simply driven by the need to compete with other makers, and probably has little to do with the function of the saw.

I don't have a 19" tenon saw, but I do have a few 14" sash tenon, and the extra length makes a huge difference. For carcase work a shorter crosscut, maybe 12" and 10-12 ppi.

    Regards
    Ray

    Thanks Ian and Ray,

I think, as is true for so many other tools, my search is as much for reliable quality tools as much as it is for variety.

Today I bought one of these Irwin hand saws from Bunnings ($30) in 'Fine' 11 TPI for rough dimensioning, and also a set of these Tajima Japanese pull saws from this thread. I've also ordered the Veritas crosscut saw to match the dovetail rip saw, so I reckon I've got enough to keep me covered for a while.

Ian, Thanks for the offer of a trial session. I finish my degree early in November, so I'm hoping I'll be able to pull off a Sunday afternoon to come and see you after that.
    Cheers, Richard
