I used etch primer and a spray can of satin black epoxy base paint from Bunnings. 8 years on, it's still there and has no chips or marks.
There's a boat inside me trying to get out.
    Was it something I ate?

It turned out pretty much like the original.

Thanks for replying Stevebaby, I ended up doing exactly that(epoxy), I just have a few litres of the chassis black I thought I could use up, as it is heat and oil resistant but cannot be painted over from my understanding unless using the same paint.
Thanks again. your plane came up a treat

I've used "Motospray" subrame black enamel epoxy spray (semi gloss) on several planes. I didn't use a primer, but did spend a lot of time on surface prep (needs to be completely free of old paint, dirt or oil).

I don't have a pic to hand, but it did turn out well. Perhaps a tiny bit too shiny compared to the vintage stuff, though it might not be after a few more years of abuse. Despite the instructions on the label be sure to give it about a week to cure before you start using it. This stuff is incredibly, incredibly hard and durable - more so than the old stuff IMO.

I'm currently experimenting with creating a more authentic look using asphaltum and spar varnish, per Derek's recommendation.
    Cheers,

    Eddie
