Thread: Should my new chisels look like this?

Personally I would send that pic to the seller, tell him you are dissatisfied, and demand another unblemished set or a refund.
I'd go for the refund and get these. The best set in the world.

New chisels should not be pitted like that. Ask for another set or a refund. Bahco have a good reputation so that is a surprise.

No, Bahco chisels shouldn't look like that, I'd contact Bahco as well as the seller.. send them an email with pictures.. Bahco

Bahco is generally well regarded and just the grinding looks dodgy to say the least. I wonder if they are fakes?

Hi TT,
Those Chisels make me wonder why buy Chisels from the UK.
When in fact, if you went to a Tool Sale or a Sun. Market or the like, you could pick up some very nice ones there.
Some need a bit of work, but I bet they don't work any worse than those bright shiny new ones do, & a heck of a lot cheaper.
I believe that the older ones as used over the yrs. that the steel maybe even better than what you bought from OS.

What your thoughts?

My thoughts are; that pitting is a bit of a problem on new chisels, and, if they're new, where are the machining marks? I've got 3 Sandvik chisels (Bahco's granddad) sitting as new in box.....similar handle etc. and they have light machine marks (milling) on the back of the blade.

TT, they most assuredly should not look like that. Not even my Chinese Irwins were that bad (and they were pretty bad). A little hard to tell from your phone pic, but they look like there are inclusions in the steel. Ray?

One of them lloks to be woefully out of flat at the cutting edge, and the middle one has a very nice gouge out of the socket from the grinding process. In fact, unless you've flattened the backs a bit, they look a bit like they have been hand ground on sandpaper (and that definitely doesn't happen in a factory).

Some of those pits are going tp give you grave troubles as the blades become shorter.

A refund due if ever I've seen a case for it. If you play your cards right (and send a clearer pic), Bahco might even send you a set of replacements (in other words, be nice but assertive). Wouldn't be the first time something like that has happened, where a reputable manufacturer bends over to protect their name - they are well aware that you will then sing their praises to anyone who will listen. Same thing happened with some drills in the metalwork forum recently - the real manufacturer sent a new set to replace some fakes that were purchased in Asia somewhere.

Even the backs of my $15 for 6, including finger jointed wooden box, stone and shapening jig Trojan brand chisels look better than that!!

Btw, how much did they cost, and how much was the freight?

So Friday I handed them over to a more knowledgeable eye and it turns out all the mess on the back is just debris stuck in the varnish used to protect the blade during manufacture etc.
They look great now after a sharpen, however I feel like an utter dill!
In the meantime I wrote to Bahco who did indeed offer replacements.

FenceFurniture they were $53 with free shipping from the UK.

I have a set of these PMV 11 chisels on the way! You can get them from Lee Valley for Bout $355 for the set of 5 plus postage or around $630 for a large Australian supplier! Even with postage getting them directly would be a lot cheaper than that. As it happens I am getting them delivered by my daughter when she visits.
