New Chisels - Super Price
There has been quite a bit of discussion here lately about chisels and the quality vs price compromise that is usually made when considering buying.
Lee Valley - Veritas have introduced sets of chisels from Narex - made in the Czech Republic at what appears, to me anyway as give away prices.
Chisels from Narex have received good reviews both here and on other forums. These have a very nice profile and taper as well.
I'm not sure if these are specially made to this profile for Lee Valley but they are not the regular Narex as far as I can see.
And the price is staggeringly cheap - under AU$30 for a set of 4, with larger sets available if you want. A set of seven is about AU$46.
So if you are in the market for a new set of chisels, you might consider these.

I got the email from LV this morning too- they look like very good value for money. I'll most likely get a set soon, I've been waiting on my 3 H&S chisels for 7 seven months (they were supposed to take 5 weeks) so I need a set of chisels!
I wonder how much LV would charge for delivery for a set of 7?

At that price it's almost cheaper to buy a new set each time instead of sharpening them (if you sharpen them properly)

As you say, almost too good to be true, SG. If I were starting out, & needing a set of BE chisels, I reckon this would be the one to go for, alright. Only "but" is that I didn't see anything smaller than 1/4". A 3/16" & 1/8" are handy, & essential if you want to make those ridiculously teeny dovetail pins....
Cheers,IW

I couldnt resist, I dont have a matching set of chisels, all odds & ends, and this has offended my natural need for symmetry.
I bought the set of 7 plus another item for $30 and with surface mail is costing about $100 al up.
Interestingly I had asked for a catalogue and that was going to add another $20 to the postage as it was no longer a "small parcel", so I cancelled the catalogue

Does anybody know if you can remove the handles and put your own ones in?

Removing handles off chisels isn't too hard. Just cut a slot in a piece of steel to match the tang, put the chisel in a vise, slotted steel against the ferrel and give it a really hard whack and you'll get the handle off.
The handle will go for a fly around the shed but you don't want that bit.

Me too!
Funny thing is I went to the site to order the schwarz's new book, but after reading the thread here about that I reconsidered.
$30 for the book vs. $30 for four chisels is a no-brainer.
After all I don't want to be seen as a book collector.

Maybe the difference is the extra 3 chisels, I got the set of 7 and the postage was half that

Re Narex Chisels
I'll be curious to see if they come in a wooden protective case like the set of 6 I ordered a couple of months ago.

I think the postage goes up in big chunks, so over a certain size or weight it goes to the next price.
If a number of you are thinking of buying them getting them all shipped to a common address and that person onshiping might save some $. See forum announcments, groupbuys for the forum policy on this.
I bought a set of 4 from highland, probably the old pattern but because US vs Canadian shipping worked out a lot cheaper.I'm just a startled bunny in the headlights of life. L.J. Young.
