Default How to choose a vice...

Oh if only I could pursue the other interpretation of the title!

I am about to build my first workbench, and I'm hunting for a vice. Most of the work I do is renovation based - either my own house, or as a jobbing carpenter / handyman, rather than 'genuine' woodworking, so I was fixed on a front vice. Dad has a beautiful quick release vice, so quick release would be a plus.

I've been to Bunnies and a couple of tool shops, I"ve surfed Ebay et al. I've never seen any at markets etc.

I've been searching this forum for a while, but I haven't found any advice on how to choose a vice.

As to budget, I'm a full time student, so I have no spare cash! The money I bring in jobbing I spend 20% on buying tools, so to spend $100 on a vice means saving up my earnings for up to a month! I'm not in any rush though.

Thanks, Greg. Is Dawn a good brand then? I've seen a couple advertised on ebay, I think like you said they went for $50+

I don't get to many car boot sales these days, I'm at the tail end of renovating the house, 2 young kids, a full time uni course, and Saturdays I go jobbing to earn pocket money! I'll have to start getting up earlier on Sundays!

Another thing to try is the other spelling: "vise". Most listings are under the common spelling, but you do find the odd good one under the more traditional term.

I got a nice old Record quick release on evilBay for $20 last year-so keep looking. Please let me know if you find an Emmert.

I am looking for an emmert, but I'm not sure I"ll be shouting it if I find one! I saw a couple of records go recently for very sensible prices, but its usually the postage thats the killer - adding $20 or $30 postage changes the cost dramatically, so I"m waiting for one to come up thats near by (Brisbane based).
