    Default Couple of No 1's

Was having a bit of a tidy up and re-oiling those tools that hardly if ever get used and thought that I would throw up a pic of two No 1's one a L&N the other a Stanley that I have had for a number of years.
The parameters in size in fact you could say one is the carbon copy of the other and it may well be that L&N have modelled their No1 on the Stanley well that would be my guess tho I'm not in all honesty up to speed on all things with planes.

    Very nice Johnno,
I think all the LN planes are copies or based on the old Stanleys.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

I think Lie-Nielsen started with direct copies of Stanley, but gradually have varied the designs - such as their No.10 1/4 - which has a bedrock frog (which the Stanley never had); or the No.51 which has (I believe) a No.7 size frog, whereas the Stanley had a weak No.3 size frog. And I've never heard of Stanley producing 50 & 55 degree frogs.

So Lie-Nielsen have shown some innovation IMHO.

    Cheers, Vann.

I have not compared the other bench L&N planes with the other Stanleys but i do agree that L&N were indeed innovative in maintaining some popular sizes in planes which may have been modelled from the popularity of the Stanley planes.

The two planes in the pic share a striking resemblance to one another and being small quite easy to determine.

    Cheers

    Very nice plane John.
It is interesting that LN went to the Bedrock design for all their bench planes except for their number 1.
If you want a number 1 in a Bedrock design you will have to buy it from Patrick Leach.

Have a LN No 1 nice plane to use I can keep it in my pocket for that unexpected job, last time I looked at the going price for a Stanley no 1 it was about $3,000.00.

These no1's are quite small and are really only any good for folk with small hands I have small hands and I find I still have to use it holding in the palm of my hand.
That's only on rare occasions though for a small tidying up job.

I cannot believe that the little Stanley would be fetching a price such as Phil has mentioned moreover when they were in production for a long period and probably a great many produced I guess collectors have taken a liking to them for whatever reason and a lot are locked away in cabinets etc. I do use mine on the odd occasion and it is still in very good nick with quite a bit of blade left.

    Cheers

A No1 Stanley one of those I-hope-find-one-one-day things and the seller has no idea of the value.

"Look mate, its only half the size of that other plane, so its only worth half as much..."

    Dreaming......

Too small for me - I've already established that anything less than a No.3 won't work with my clumping great mitts.

The No1 is a handy size to keep in your pocket, never know when the urge to take a shaving over comes one.

    John,
most folk who have not seen or held a #1 can't get how much the "cute" factor is there in them.
