Dawn No. 9 quick release vice
Hey all. I recently bought a second hand dawn no 9 quick release vice.
It is missing the quick release part of it, im guessing a rod slides into where the half nut goes and turns or something to engage / disengage it?
Does anyone have a drawing or some photos of one they could post?
I have tried emailing dawn with no reply, i will ring when i get a chance as i think the half nut is buggered also. Hopefully i can still get one 🤔
Anyway thanks all, have been a long time lurker and found great info here!
Cheers
Dan

Dan, first, welcome to this section of the Forum.
Now, to tackle your question: I'm not familiar with the Dawn QR, but the example you have may not use a cam actuated from the front to open the half-nut (someone is sure to know). Some vises used a slightly different set-up, where you simply back-off the screw a bit and the nut opens, allowing you to slide the screw back. It will only tighten under a bit of pressure, so if you are winding it back & forth with nothing to grip, it may appear that the nut isn't holding. That said, they do wear and do need replacing, on many old vises.
A pic or two might help us to have a better guess at what any problem might be due to....
Cheers,IW

I can post some photos of my Dawn 175 (7") quick release mechanism since it is off the bench currently?

Pretty sure Dawn used the back off system as described by Ian.
I scored two of these years ago and gave one to my neighbour.

A photo would be great thanks v. It definately has some parts missing, i will take a photo shortly and post. I rigged it up so the half nut stays engaged but it seems to pop out with too much tension.
Cheers

Yes, well I was wrong about the mechanism - it's not the type I was thinking of, it's similar to the Record system. At least you've got the nut, that's the crucial part, but the missing bits will have to be found or manufactured if you want it to work properly. Some parts were still available from Dawn 8 or 9 years ago, but they may have run out of old stock by now...

I have the same model:

You're missing the flat bar that controls the quick release. It should be a simple job to make one. Let me know if you want the dimensions.
BTW it's a great vice, and the quick release is invaluable.

Which makes me wonder if the bar was cannibalised to repair another vice. I'd be checking that the half nut is working. I don't think they make them any more. You can still get them in cast iron.
