Default Demonstrating the Knew Concepts fretsaw

While working on the current build (I will post this later), I took a couple of minutes to make a very short video using a Knew Concepts fretsaw to remove the waste from pins. The purpose is to demonstrate how to efficient this process is, as compared with chopping the waste out. Note that the wood is 20mm thick Hard Maple (it is indeed very hard wood!). These are mitred through dovetails for the carcase of a side table with drawers.

Hello Derek, was that your normal height of the board for cutting the waste or just for the demo? The movement of the board could be affecting the smoothness of the cut.

Its a really lovely fret saw. I treated myself to one recently after the Bunnings one i previously had suffered a tragic "accident".

Let me guess! You thought you'd teach it to fly, but found out it wasn't any good at that either?

I keep looking at those Knew Concept saws, maybe I'll have some money next year.

    Hi Pat

I was surprised to see a little rocking when reviewing the video. I can only put that down to having the board much higher than usual, and probably not tightening it down as much as I could have done.

It is an interesting side issue, that is, I am fairly tolerant of board height or the angle of the set up being less than ideal, and just adjust my body or hand to deal with it. I noted the very sight rocking when cutting, and ignored it. It did not appear to affect the sawing or the quality of the resulting cuts.

It is always good to see alternate ways to complete the the same task, interesting that the same fret saw when used by a jeweller /silversmith/goldsmith, becomes a piercing saw.

    Hi Derek,

Any reason for three fretsaws, (other than he who dies with the most tools wins )?

Ross, I have a lot more than three of the saws! I was responsible for the Knew Concepts fretsaw being developed into a version for woodworkers, and worked with the late Lee Marshall, who was KC, to create the design. The original saw was a simple affair for jewellers. As the design for woodworkers evolved, so Lee would send me another saw to test.

Here is the original article I wrote: http://www.inthewoodshop.com/ToolRev...tsFretsaw.html

One other article to bring it up to date: http://www.inthewoodshop.com/ToolRev...geFretsaw.html
