Whew ! Well that's welcome news. I was beginning to worry a bit. Now the only question is how I'm gonna slip it into the oven without the missus catching me...

I've been pondering about this brew for a bit and it seems that if the 78 is ashphaltum and shellac in metho then a bit of linseed oil might not hurt. Any thoughts ??

It can't hurt - BLO seems to make the film more flexible - without the BLO it is brittle and can crack off.

But we are all just in the realm of 'suck it and see'.

As for the wife - offer to clean the oven after you bake the japanning. Works every time for me.
    Cheers

Sounds like a pretty heavy price to pay to use the oven

My jar of goo is full to the top and needs more metho (is too thick) so I might decant it into two jars and mix BLO into one and see how it goes.

    Regards,
    Chris

Yep the price is far too high! I hate cleaning ovens ! Think I might try and steal the large Breville toaster oven and hide it in the garage instead.

My brew is also pretty thick so I reckon I'll chase up some BLO and do the same. i.e split it in two and add BLO to one.

Once you get it hot it should go really liquid and all the brush marks and lumps should disappear ,although with my recipe it is not lumpy and is a bit thicker than molasses.

I sent my Mrs to the hairdressers and got the oven for nearly three hours ,which is plenty of time .
She was a bit concerned about a lingering odour in the kitchen ,"sort of smells like road tar " she said.

I just managed to get the frame of the mitre saw in there at a angle . Don't think I'd get a no 8 Stanley in there .

Thanks for the advice Woodlee; although I got up this morning to find the wife has both the main and the big toaster oven in full swing in preparation for the usual round of Christmas dishes. so I guess my goop baking tests are at a halt for a while.

And since we're off to the inlaws on Boxing Day for a few days, it may be a while before I get back to it. FIL's parting words when he left a few weeks ago were
" I reckon I've got one of those wooden planes and a few other bits and pieces in the shed. We'd better have a look when you come up for Christmas".

What a Guy! I get to rummage through his shed for Christmas. What more could a bloke ask for

You could ask to borrow the oven while you're there

    Hi everyone and merry christmas
sorry for the late reply but unfotunately work comes before the internet
i didnt actually dunk the brush into the crushed record but dipped the brush into the black stuff that leached out after a few days, the longer you leave it the more it disolves to a point so you are more or less painting on a coat of brown metho
and leave it 24 hours between each coat just let dry on the shed bench after 3 coats
    it comes up great
i left the brush in a seperate jar of metho or turps not sure and top up metho after 2nd coat that way you get more stuff
have to go wife threatening blue murder as i have been at work all day and have neglected her for woodforum when i got home

Jimbur beat me to it - I too was going to suggest the inlaw's oven.

Another suggestion: Don't try japanning the FIL's wooden plane, and don't put it in the oven. .

Cheers and Merry Christmas all, Vann.

or if you sheds big enough go around looking at the hard rubish in your area might pick up an old electric stove/oven that may still work, just have to rig it up though

Distortion of the cast iron? No chance unless there are already horrible stresses in in already.

Default Go get yer own oven !!

Firstly, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all..

Well The trip to the inlaws for a few days is over and the universal answer on ovens is "Go get yer own oven to bake that muck in" Maybe Harrison has the right idea and since a trip to the local recycling centre is about due I'll have a look around and see what can be found. The dissolved 78's, shellac and BLO will have to wait a day or two more

Vann, you'll be pleased to know we couldn't find the wooden plane; only a couple of nice old Titan chisels, so there's no chance of me trying japanning on wooden planes. . Of course now I'll need a lathe to make new handles !!!!

Since we couldn't locate FIL's wooden plane I had a look through a few second hand places on the trip back and found some I liked which I've posted some questions about in another thread. At least I don't have to worry about japanning 'em

Crikey, the thread ends!! What happened!!

Did the BLO improve the brew?

Did it ever make it to an oven?

What's the verdict on this method of japanning?

    Help - I can't sleep - I need to know.
