Thread: Dumb question - Chisel Roll

Hi Dave,

The blades go into the pocket. The idea is to protect the cutting edges from getting damaged, well, that and to stop your fingers from getting cut.

I guess you could put them handle first and it would still work, but you'd need to be pretty careful you don't cut your fingers?

My observation is that carving chisel sets tend to be stored blade out so that you can find the chisel you want without having to pull them all out. They will have an extra flap that folds over the blades to protect them. Check out a Pfeill carving roll.
Carpenters or cabinet chisel will be blade in if there is no flap and blade out if there is a flap.

Blade out. If they are sharp, they will go right through the pockets in a roll when the blade side is turned in.

I find rolls better for carving tools (even then, an open rack is better if you have an environment that doesn't cause carving tools to rust).

Rolls seem to me more of a way to transport chisels from place to place, but a pain in the dingle to deal with for regularly used tools, and an opportunity to cut a roll if handling all the time, or an opportunity to accidentally drop a chisel out of a roll when opening.

Yep this happened too, sliced right through. ALthough it was the side and not the bottom of the pocket thankfully.

As it was a gift, i kinda feel required to use it, but i don't think it is really my thing - the main chisels i use are in a box set that holds them nicely.

Not much you can do but use it.

Sorry was not meant to sound pessimistic, just that at one stage or other we all get a gift from people who are not wood workers but have a great deal of caring towards us.

One way to tell which way around it's meant to be, is to look at the width of the pockets, it they are graduated, then it's blade in the pocket, if all the pockets are the same width, then it could be either way, I guess.

If you are cutting the leather, try inserting them bevel down and slide at a slight angle to keep the cutting edge clear of the leather.

I think chisels are best stored and carried about in a small box, with separate partitions for each chisel. Have a look at Derek Cohen's here

I don't know whether this is the correct way or not, but I have always carried chisel sets in rolls with the edges down like this:

I have 4 tool rolls for my wood carving gouges. Tips up. The flaps fold over those and away they go.
Sure! you can get whacked putting them away. . . . or taking them out. Pay attention. Never lose your
focus on the task at hand with carving-sharp edges.
I can't do like #9Barnes as all my gouge handles are the same.
