EBay find
As some of you may know I have been collecting a set of BOTH Falcon planes and Pope planes - all 7 of each. Until now I had only two missing for a full set - well now that is down to one.
However, the Pope 4 1/2 that I received today is a special case - all the attributes of a Pope plane (blue base, diecast aluminium frog, plain laquer on the woodwork), Pope levercap BUT the name and model on the front is Falcon F4 1/2. Apparently this is only the third time (according to the HTPAA) that a transitional plane has been held in captivity, in that brief period of changeover when all the casting patterns were not renewed (carrying the Pope name).
Good find or what! Pix tomorrow in the daylight.

Falcon Plane
Hello Loco1960
Well done on the find, I am also a collecter of Falcon planes. I have managed to find all bar the curved bottm spokrshave, I keep looking as this is also the fun of collecting.
I look forward to the photo.
Cheers Gerry

Falcon-Pope transitional plane
Below are photos of the transitional plane - as received, then with the base casting washed and polished with a little auto polish. The frog is cleaned up and all hardware wire brushed and oiled, ready for the restored handles and sharpened iron.

Nice find. My set of Falcons is missing a 6 and the curved base spokeshave. I'm not in any hurry though...

Well done Loco.
Falcon/Pope blades are one of Australia's best kept secrets.
They are thicker than the equivalent Stanley, and the ones that I have experienced hold a very good edge.
That plane is going to look pretty bling-y when you have finished.
Cheers

Falcon and Pope planes
SG,
I agree; they are solid and beautifully built products. Most of mine are users (OK - I have a matching set of three #4's on the kitchen shelf - with the three versions of lever cap.) and are a joy to hold and use. I have bought so many more as 'irresistable bargains' and restored them that the friends and neighbours are all in posession of a good-as-new 9-inch. Even my 25yo daughter has a 9-IN and a Pope #4 on display in her kitchen - an astounding coup!
BR,
Fraser
PS: some Pix would be good!

Nice find!
I'm working on getting a complete set as well (missing the 9 IN, spokeshave and the block plane). They will be users as they came from the local Sunday market. The guy there has made it his mission in life to strip off the japanning from every plane he gets his hands on. I'm getting ready to try the old record re japanning approach. Just trying to work out how much linseed oil to add to the mixture.
Good luck with finding the last one.

Hi PopeFalcon,
Love the moniker - why didn't I think of that?
The 9-IN with the "Falcon - A Pope Product" are plentiful in the Eastern states - several a week. There is one on Ebay at the moment in WA: see item 160435637227. Looks to be in better than the average treasure market condition.
BTW, I have only found one 9-IN with the "Falcon-Pope" lever cap.
