I sold a stone like this on the bay about two years ago for $300 odd. Mine was made by a company that was taken over by Norton many years ago. I purchased mine for three shillings from a tool store that closed down in Brunswick, Victoria in the early 50's. It was in its original box, and unused. Obviously, I sold mine too early! The stones were made for sharpening cut-throat razors. I was told they are highly sought after by axemen, who use them to put the finest possible edge on their racing axes. Maybe they then use the axes to shave with, but I am not sure of that. The guy who bought mine was an axeman in WA.

I did a web search and found that Norton still make a similar item, or did until a few years ago, and sell it for the price you might expect, $20 or $30 or so. However, it is only the very old stones that are considered to be worthy of being applied to the best racing axes.

That is hilarious! Best part of the ad:

    Polie
    Maybe more misinformation...
I have a Catalogue, from the hands of Mr Murray, of the Famous Murray's Tool Store in Edinburgh, Scotland, that lists it for sale in 2001 - 2002.
Got a look in the basement at his tool collection, and was able to purchase a couple of treasures. He was laughing as he told me he sold Norris planes new when he first started in his father's business!
I bought a new old stock #78 no more than 3 years ago from a hardware store that was moving...it came with a #75, and a #90. I spied them in a open cupboard behind the counter.
Late last year I also bought NEW, 6 boxes of Rabone boxwood rules from a company closing down...old stock is still floating about.

    Regards,
    Peter

    Hi Polie,
I think Hans has based his Stanley by the Numbers pages on US made Stanley planes only.
A useful cross reference is Patrick Leach's Blood and Gore website at Superior Works - again for US models only.
This site is down at the moment so I can't check the US number 78 production dates. Someone with Walter's Stanley Guide would be able to confirm it.

    Cheers

    Hi SG
as far as I can tell Patrick's site is not so much down, as on a server that the Australian DNS servers don't know about, or Senator's Conroy's internet filter is censuring it.
I say this because with a bit of Googling it's possible to get to an archive copy of Blood and Gore that is no more than a few days old.
    eg
This is Google's cache of http://www.supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan0a.html. It is a snapshot of the page as it appeared on 18 Feb 2012 22:10:57 GMT.
does anyone have the full DNS address for Blood and Gore?
    regards from Alberta, Canada

    Thanks Ian,
I still can't find the website, but with your encouragement, have dug up an archive.
    This about the 78:
    #78 Duplex filletster and rabbet plane, 8 1/2"L (8 1/4", 1936 on), 1 1/2"W, 3lbs, 1885-1973.

The Superior Works: Stanley Blood and Gore Planes #71 - #87

    Thanks for that
