Exactly that Ian . Thanks.
Is that the way they are normally done, the old English ones?

Rob, I have to admit I have no idea - I just made it up as I went along! Derek Cohen uses a great big backsaw & a guide to saw sliding d/t & trench sides. I tried that & found it cumbersome, but my home-made jobbie is much easier to use & has worked well for me, though I have only used it on a couple of jobs so far. It's one of those tools I only need once a year, as an amateur, but I reckon you'd have it out a lot more often.....

Yep, thanks peter, I have seen them , I was just wondering if the older UK or US ones I have seen are like Ian's , the blade sandwiched between the wood instead of screwed to one side like the eBay one. and adjustable as well .
Or were the old wooden type fixed so they allways cut the same depth?

Stanley #6 plane for $80
I was looking around for a #6 plane (or similar) after using one in a woodworking course. They're around (new) for <$200.
Found this - asking $80:
STANLEY NO 6 PLANES SALE AS IT PLEASE EMAIL ME IF INTEREST | Hand Tools | Gumtree Australia Woden Valley - Isaacs
Got a little scared.
Then I thought "Man up, get that rust off with a bit of sanding and it could be great, so long as the sole's ok..."
[Gone to hide under bed so the planing nightmares don't get me]

That would probably still clean up ok ... but better at $40-50.
But I'd warrant that someone on here could get you a far better example at a good price ...
Cheers,
Paul

Yes, 80 bucks is a bit cheeky for something in that condition. It does have wooden handles, not plastic, which puts it pre-1970-ish. The sole & sides don't appear to be pitted, & should clean up ok, as Paul says, but lord knows what condition the blade is in. That's not a major concern, since an after-market blade is likely to be a big improvement on what's in it at present.....

That should clean up just fine, looks like a decent Bailey. Most of what you see on the sole will come off with a razor blade. Offer 50, all he can do is say no.
