Butchers saw for bones I'm pretty sure, thus my 'jointers' quip.

Rob
I just returned to the thread to say the same thing. I was looking through a Simonds catalogue and their No.252 looks exactly the same and it is a butcher's saw.

It does have an elaborate handle for such a saw. Disston also made that kitchen saw/knife hybrid early on as well but the styling on them is purely utilitarian.

Fancy bit of kit - is it stamped 'this saw is for fine work, not for hacks' or something like that?
Cheers,IW

From Simonds' 1912 catalogue :
Simonds No.252.jpg
Butchering was a lucrative part of the market. The 1912 catalogue listed nine butchers saws, three kitchen saws and two beef splitting saws ( for halving the carcass). The saw above, like the Disston Rob alerted us to was the only one with the wide blade although the beef splitter had the same width.

Yes, having to say it's rare usually means it isn't.
It's it bit like those countries that have Democratic in their name. They aren't.

Right up there with "Vintage" being used to describe tools made anytime during the last decade

I just bought a saw made by Henry Disston and Sons on ebay last night I needed a long saw for my miter that I bought last week. The ad never said "vintage, rare or unique" so maybe I got a good one. Like looking for a wife here in the hills, you just hope they have all their teeth.

Saw came in post already. Fits my miter perfectly, and has all its teeth. Seems to be sharp.
