Ebay surprise
Picked up an English-made Stanley #5 1/2 and for a change got a pleasant surprise.
It came with a Record Tungsten Vanadium blade that had been lapped. Not seen one of these before. Anyone know their story?
The knob and tote had been replaced. The tote wasn't well finished but was interestingly made. A plate to fit the mount and then dovetailed into it the rest of the tote. So long-grain plate, and long-grain handle.
The bare iron of the sole had been lacquered.
The guy who sold it knew nothing about planes so somewhere earlier in its story was someone who put a bit of effort into it.
ADDED: just reshaped the blade bevel on a dry grinder and good grief, that steel blues in an eyeblink.Cheers, Ern

Sounds like a nice find
I noticed the same easy bluing with the old laminated Stanley irons as well - wonder if it's the same alloy. The white grinding wheels were a bit nicer than the grey ones though.
