EC Simmons Keen Kutter with nib
I picked up this EC Simmons Keen Kutter:
- 19 3/4" blade
- nib
- recessed medallion with narrow threaded shaft
Now for the bad news -- chip in top horn, one replaced sawnut (top).
Any idea on age? Model?
Thanks.

This could be a difficult one. I looked in a 1920 and a 1931 catalogue and there was nothing resembling your saw. I think it is early because of the sunken medallion (and the nib). However, I suspect, but don't know, that Atkins may have made these saws and they used a sunken style medallion for longer than others.

The more I look at this, the more confused and frustrated I become. E.C.Simmonds used the Keen Kutter logo on everything.
Neither the etch nor the medallion have this. In fact the medallion has a single bit axe. I have tried to find when the patent for the Keen Kutter logo first appeared, but I have been unsuccessful. Maybe one of our patent experts can help. It is possible that this saw predates the logo below.
A comment I would make is that a search of the net brings up the subject of "fakes." However if I was going to fake something I would try to make it look authentic.
This saw could be an early one but post 1890 (the saw screws).
I looked on Ebay and did find some more examples of the same medallion.

Paul, thanks for the info. Initially when I looked at this saw, the etch was covered in rust, and my first thought was the medallion was a replacement, especially after I saw the top sawnut had been replaced. I had no idea Keen Kutter was that old (nib and recessed medallion). After cleaning it up and seeing the etch matched the medallion, I was a bit surprised. The handle looked old as well. Every other KK I have seen has had the typical KK logo on it.
Thanks again for the research.
