Ok,

I have question for all the wooden plane users out there. I have normally use Japanese hand planes as such I am really liking the results that it achieves. However I recently bought a second hand European style smoothing plane that was Australian made by Berg Tools Australia. It appears to me made from spotted gum.

The question have is as the design seems really solid and well made. Would the same geometry work with say a 60mm wide blade? think a 4 1/2 Stanley Like the 70mm Japanese planes that cut a 60mm wide? As I am looking at making my own as a heavy soother.

The next big question is would it work without a chip breaker/cap Iron as both my German scrub and Australian smoothing wooden planes are thick solid cutters with no chip breaker? As are very old Japanese planes as well as very small japanese planes.
