Default Extra large shoulder plane needed

    Hi Guys and Girls
Has anyone come across a shoulder plane that has a bit more height to to them. All the shoulder planes I have seen or seached for only have a height of 60 -70mm at the most. So what I hate is when I'm tidying up a shoulder on a 50mm or more tenon and you catch your finges or knuckles on the end of the tenon. If I can't find a commercialy made one I may have to make my own but I realy don't have the time at the moment.

Tilting handles instead of extra height maybe?

    Hi Seanz
I did look at that one and it does look like a nice plane and better than the average shoulder plane but if you add another 25mm to the tenon in the photo you can see how it would still become awkward. It is just as they say in their blurb for cleaning up breadboard ends etc. I now either use my stanley 92 or my LN 10 1/4 Carriage plane which has tilting handles also but its a bit big so I thought I would look for something more suitable.

I don't use a shoulder plane. There is a nice crisp scribe line to set your chisel into and clean up the shoulder, similar to how you clean up a dovetail. You can slightly under cut if you wish and it doesn't show or effect the strength of the joint.

    Hi Mike
On small jobs its not an issue and using a chisel or the standard size shoulder plane is fine but some of the tables I do can be up to 55" wide with bread board ends. Thats basicly a long tenon joint. If you look at my Blackwood surprise thread you can see what I'm rabbiting on about. I may have another table to do that is 6' sq and it may have BB ends as well. I know I can get by without it but if there was something available it would just make my life easier.

Yeh, Terrys were the first ones I thought of but yes still a bit small. 80 woud give you enough to get a grip 100 would give you a good grip and its end grain that I realy need it for which you need a good grip for. Might give him a call if I can't find anything.

I use a skew plane like this to clean tenon shoulders, place it sideways and hold it from the top, the length of the tenon wouldn't matter then.

    Hi CH

    Just a thought!

Have you looked at the LN No 51 as an option?

I have the clifton 3 in 1 shoulder plane and its great. A heavy duty scrub plane iron may serve double duty if you make a simple custom shoulder plane.

    Hi Johnno, Clinton
Hadn't thought about the shooting board plane but its very similar in form to the LN 10 1/4 Carriage Makers plane I'm using now which does a good job but I thought if I could find a suitable SP it would be better still.

Lots of great sugestions from everyone. Johnno not sure about the price of the shooting board plane expensive even for LN

Yes Peter thats more the style of thing I will have to go for to get the height I'm looking for, with brass wear plates like the Terry Gordons only higher.
Sorry I missed your post Woodhog, lovely plane but still looking for more height like the ones Peter posted above.
