Frederick Tucker PLane
Hi all,
I need some help. (And not just generally ). I bought an old wood plane at the markets on sunday with the makers name "Frederick Tucker".
I only have the 2nd revision of Goodman and there is next to nothing on this maker.
Just wondering If anyone can help with a bit more info. It seems to have an earlier style wedge but the font on the front seems to be 19th century.
I can post a pic if anyone needs it.
Cheers

A photo usually does help. Also, are you sure it's a maker's mark - some owners put pretty good name marks on their planes!
Cheers

I too only have the 2nd edition, though can't seem to find it to see what it says.
Early Planemakers of London doesn't list a Tucker but it is a bit too early.
Usual searches of the old tools list archive don't show up anything either.
There is a mention in the archives of the London courts, 22nd November 1847, where a Frederick Tucker, a toolmaker and who's father is a plane maker, is witness in a case regarding fraud related to some tools. search for the case reference "t18471122-199"
Browse - Central Criminal Court
I can't even find anything in the Sheffield directories.
Are there any markings on the blade?

makers mark
Hi Jeremy,
Im fairly certain it is a makers mark. There are some owners marks, but Frederick Tucker is listed in Goodman's. Problem is that all that is given is an address and 1 as the number of copies seen. There is no date given for the business at all. The address is New street, Regents park(presumably London).
There is either an owners name or a dealers name on the back of R P Vincent.
I have included some pics
Cheers

London Courts
Well I never would have though of looking there. Especially not for Plane fraud .
The London connection seems more feasible based on the ltd info from Goodman. I shall check that out. That timeframe seems to fit in with the wedge shape especially if the father is the same name and a maker.
Many thanks Peter.
Cheers

I agree - that looks like a maker's mark. And Mid-C19 London looks like the likely time and place.Cheers

Goodman 3rd ed give a directory date of 1846, but the premises were occupied by another business from 1846. So pre-1846 seems likely.
