    Fuzzie,
    your brace is the style patented by Nelson Spofford in 1859 and made by John S Fray in the USA and later by Stanley. The wing nut is not standard for the above makers but may be a result of the original thread being stripped or the brace could be made by someone else. The third photo in Andymac's last post shows the thumbscrew as used by Fray.
    Fray usually had the sweep size cast in the underside of the head.
