My grandads tools
20170915_082601[1].jpgI picked these up from my aunty not long ago, they were my grandpa's . The block plane needs a lot of work, the sole needs to be smoothed out and the iron given a new edge. I'm not sure of the brand of plane, there are no markings on it but the iron has a made in germany stamp on it. I remember the plane from when I was young - so it's at least 25 years old, same with the chisels.
The chisels also need to be given some new life, on the bottom is a cheap Chinese chisel that I started restoring yesterday. It was the first time I tried re-edging a chisel on my bench grinder and it went pretty well. The other middle chisel is a Titan and the top a Stormont, which are pretty damn good chisels from the research I've done. Obviously they need a bit of work.
I managed to get the sole of the plane down to this point today using 180grit wet/dry. There are still a few gouge marks that are quite deep.

That block plane is an unusual design. I got some old chisels with good names from my FIL and cleaned them up, but unfortunately they had seen a lot of water at some stage and had a lot of severe pitting around the cutting end. Its a real shame as the steel seems quite hard when doing the initial grind.
At least you will be able to get some practice on the cheap chisel before you start on the good ones.
Make sure you show us the finished products.

So I've finished the plane, the Chinese chisel and the titan.

I can't actually believe how fun it is to use a sharp plane haha.

This is the Titan, shaving sharp. I did practice on the Chinese chisel first but my experience keeping my knives shaving sharp helped a bit. Lots of hairs were hurt in the making of this edge.
Cheers.
