It's an interesting point actually Luke, which has many possible answers.....

I reckon you are born with a natural preference for one or the other. My primary joy definitely comes from making something with wood, & metal is just a means to that end (and an almost indispensable one unless you know a dedicated flint-knapper or are prepared to hone your neolithic skill set). Metalwork can be satisfying enough, and I guess the basic principles are similar to working wood, i.e., take a lump of raw material & knock off the bits that don't look like whatever it is you want. But it's more than just woodwork with harder material (Gidgee & Western Rosewood excepted! ), there's a whole new world to learn about & skills to refine, so I know I'll never be much more than a fringe-dweller in the metalworking world. I do metalwork for the greater good only - making woodwork easier/more enjoyable.

OTH, if you posed a similar thought over on the metalwork forum I reckon you'd get a very different view or two.

Grain is ok, you learn to live with it, and we do like it for its decorative value, don't we? I reckon there must be a few metal bashers who secretly envy us woodies, look how they go to so much fuss & bother to make that Damascus steel, I'm sure it's just to satisfy their inner need for a bit of grain structure......

    Cheers,
    IW
