Default Hand saw screws & nuts.

I have an old Disston hand saw which belonged to my Dad. The handle is knocked about so I will make a new one.. Any idea where I can get screws & nuts for it? Maybe somebody can identify it for me also. It is a skew back, 23 " from tip to the 1st. screw. It is a rip saw and is only 5 pts. per inch. It is only 20mm wide at the tip. Is it a panel saw?

As for the saw nuts, I think the best thing you can do is to try to use the ones that you have already - get a cheap blade screwdriver and use an angle grinder to cur a slot in the blade so you can use it to undo the nuts.

Alternatively, you may end up having to make your own - how to do that is detailed on Norse Woodsmith

the saw nuts and bolts are called chicago nuts and bolts and the best way to get replacements is to go to a saw sharpening doctor or buy a crapped out saw from a garage sale and use the bolts from them.
in newcastle i went to newcastle industrial sharpening were an old gentleman use to work and he had a collection i paid about $2 per nut and bolt.
try the disstonian institute.com for a history on disstons and restoration technics
    best wishes and good luck

Thank you fellas for your replies. I think I may have sourced what I require. The Saw Doctor is also a good idea. I will get a full set if possible as some of them look OK but are worn on the shanks because the blade has been loose in the handle & chewed them up. I see a couple of good sites re. saw handle making on the web also.
    Regards.

    Patonga,

I almost certainly have one the same, from my dad or grandad. I have restored several old Disstons and have bought a bunch of assorted nuts on US ebay from time to time. Cost me about $20 for a hundred or so, all mixed but I was able to make up a few sets. Many medallions too. Of course you never have the exact one you want....

I agree with the old saw at the market plan - you often see a throw-away relic but the nuts are all there. Usually less than $5.

    BR,

    Fraser

    Fraser,
"The old saw at the market" is a good idea I'll remember it. May even find something else to restore. Had a look at the handle today. I was wondering how I was going to cut the slot as I had a look at some refurbishing tips on the web & one bloke had to use a slitting saw of some kind. I am lucky as there are no radiused cuts required so I can just use a back saw.
regards & thanks to all who came up with suggestions.

The Carb-I-Tool catalogue lists saw screws. They are on page 44, Part No. SSCREW.

I haven't had reason to buy any, but a Carb-I-Tool router bit reseller should be able to order them in.
