Default hand saw sharpening in Hobart ????

Took a handsaw to be sharpened today to a locally run family business that I have used for years only to find that sadly it is in receivership and has closed. Really great people - helpful and friendly and a place where handsaws were sharpened by hand by a very knowledgable and skilled saw doctor. Very sad to see a local business that offered quality personal service go under.

Does any member know of good sharpener in the Hobart area or I guess anywhere in Tas for that matter?Trying to avoid a machine sharpen after a very bad blueing experience some years ago.

    Hey,
I've been once in Moona (main road near the BP station) for my chisels and I think the guy is sharpening saw blades too but I'm not completely sure. Need to check.

They sharpen a bit everything I think. I have to collect my blades and chisels tomorrow, I can ask at the same time if you want...

    Default Saw sharpening

What about learning to sharpen your saws your self? My father in law, who sadly

passed away last week aged 89, taught me how to sharpen saws and other edges.

A lot of these skills are going missing as the old timers pass on.

I would love to learn for sure, but I haven't found someone yet unfortunately to teach me.

I agree it is a skill worth preserving and its starting to look as though I might have to learn to hand sharpen. Would be great to have a tutor but books and the DVD will probably be the way. In the shop that folded the owners dad had come out of retirement and kept the handsaw sharpening tradition alive.

A sharpening class would be a great Adult Ed course, I'd sign up

why don't you approach "the owner's dad" to teach you how to sharpen

the more I think of it, "snowyskiesau" is on his way to Hobart which will make 1 more so surely there's enough forumites in the general vicinity (southern half of the isle) for you to organise a couple of Saturday morning watch / learn / practice sessions

Thought of that too Ian and have been trying to find out where he is. Only knew them thru the business. Will keep asking around.

    I've got,

The Complete Guide To Sharpening by Leonard Lee.

    The Taunton Press. ISBN 1-56158-125-9

It covers everything I need to know at my level of expertise (4/10)

A dvd might be better than a book. I've got some panel beating dvds but have to come

down to the house to look at them. SWMBO views with suspicion me entering the

house during daylight hours (smoko & lunch excepted)

Yeah, I know I should have all that dvd gear up at the shed. Maybe when we get one of

them newfangled digitattle TV's I'll move the old one up there.

Have you tried the real estate agent who managers the shop?
They should have a contact address for the previous tenant.
