    Default cleaning underway

May thanks for all of the advice above. Got rid of 99% of rust by scrubbing (longways) with a green kitchen scouring pad and wd40 which I figured would be step #1 and least invasive/harmful.

Have gotta do some reading about sharpening and setting teeth etc ( have got a workshop practice book about saws) and will read all the above posts again and absorb a bit more of the finer points of restoring the blade.

    Default Proof of polish

Finally got a tube of autosol and tried the Alfoil scrub.

Looks like the saw was made in Canada rather than America so the medallion wont help me to estimate age. "Disston made saws in Canada from 1910 until the 1950's, allowing the company to avoid a tariff on saws sold in the British Commonwealth." from here Online Reference of Disston Saws -- The Medallions

The varnish on the handle was a bit friable and flaking off in a couple of spots so sanded it off and recoated it.

I think the black spots on the blade are areas where the rust went slightly deeper and left a pit - I didn't think it was worth the effort to try to clean them out. The most annoying one is right on the etching.

I've never used a decent handsaw before and its quite astonishing how easily it cuts lumps of hardwood and of course mdf just seems to melt and dissappear. Depending upon the job, nowadays it is often easier for me to cut by hand rather than set up on table saw.

Some photos attached ..................... and many thanks for all the help and tips.

............. and blimey, IanW, that is a good looking saw did you make it ? https://www.woodworkforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=399000&d=1478296329

To answer a previous question (pmgee) I think the saw is very slightly breasted and the toothline looks fine to me.

I like that saw. It has come up very well and, for me anyway, there is an unusual feature in that I have not seen a ppi stamp for 6 1/2 before.
