    Default Happy Anniversary.

Happy (Belated) 150th anniversary Mr Lewis.
On December 4th 1866, Henry C Lewis of Essex Connecticut USA was granted US patent No 60207 for an improvement in a countersink bit. His invention is to combine the countersink with the bit to avoid "the inconvenience of changing the instrument" and to be "positively central with the hole itself".
I was looking through my Gimlets in relation to the thread titled Gimlet on Steroids by Gaza58 in Antique and Collectible Tools and happened to notice the patent date of examples of H C Lewis' countersink gimlets.
The smaller of the two in my photo came in a box marked "1 Dozen. Countersink Bits. Manufactured by O.V.B. Expressly for Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. Chicago Ill".
I hope this anniverseral news has made your day.
    Cheers,
    Geoff.

Now there's a great niche for a collector, Geoff. At a bit for each size & gauge of screw, that means quite a few bits to make a full set. Much happy hunting to be had!

    Cheers,
    IW

Aaarrrggghhh! Ian, I've already started, with three different sizes but it doesn't stop there, differing styles too. This one has the back of the countersink section open.

What are these white coated people walking up my driveway? No! Get back! I don't need help...that straight jacket is not my size... Aarrggghh!

    Geoff.
