Thread: Harold & Saxon chisel orders

It might be an idea if he took his webpage down......
Harold & Saxon – Chisel & Tool Co. Australia
This gives the impression that it is still an operating business, just waiting to sell you (admittedly beautiful) chisels. Anyone who doesn't frequent these forums would have no idea what's really going on behind the scenes.

I find it hard to believe Trent does not know who he has taken deposits from. It is sad that his buisness has gone under. I still live in hope that I'll get some tools one day. Im not banking on it but hope that he will make good when and if he can. I have had a similar conversation to Luckyduck as to Trents desire to do things very differently if he ever returns to making chisels. Way down the track for new stuff. Some time in the nex 12 months to get on with the back orders? We will see.

I could not possibly agree more. The fact that the site is still up and for all we know he is still actively taking orders and making chisels is the point at which my sympathy dwindles.

I think if he made off the rack chisels, the people who lost money with him and then saw stuff being made and then sold would be pretty irate.
This kind of thing isn't really that uncommon over here, though - business owner makes nice stuff, people want it, they open a business where they are a one-man-band trying to organize orders, production, shipping, acquisition of materials, etc, and they get overwhelmed or worse (depressed, anxious, etc. .....whatever) and their perception of reality changes and they do unreasonable things they never would have without a business.
On the flip side, the people who have run successful businesses have often said the same as he's said - they'd like to make stuff off the rack only. They make it, they post it, you buy it if you get it first, and they don't have to deal with a customer and constant waste of time talking to people to give them order status updates, etc.
I got taken by a custom guitar maker here before I was a woodworker, and I had excellent experience with other makers. The guy who took me for a ride would talk to you all day on the phone if you wanted and tell you anything you wanted to hear. The guy who ran a tight ship (Geoff Stelling) would talk to you for as brief as he had to, and he was set up so that you only called him if you had a question that the dealer couldn't answer - you didn't go to him first. You didn't feel very warm and fuzzy after talking to him on the phone, but man do they run a good business with super tight quality.
Of course, the wenzloff debacle here is pretty public, too. This sounds more like that (someone mention depression or anxiety above?).
If I were in the position you guys were in, I'd get my money back if you could. I have a dud $3000 guitar that is unfit for resale and that can't be fixed. I lucked out with the guy who took me for a ride, though - lots of people sent instruments to him to repair and never got them back, and some sent as much as $20K for custom orders and never got anything. It would appear that if you ordered from overseas, he saw you as a helpless target.

Hi Folks,
I've just been contacted by Trent and he has asked me to let people know that he is almost ready to jump back into production. But, first he wants to make good on any back orders and refund any deposits that people believe are outstanding. My contact has been through facebook, I have a current Mobile number but initial contact through email would be best.
[email protected]
I feel confident that if you make contact you will find Trent is in a much better place now and he will respond. Tell him Kev sent you...lol.
I hope all will be resolved once and for all shortly.Last edited by kevjed; 22nd September 2017 at 07:16 AM. Reason: Update info

Thanks Kev, that is good news and restores my faith. I guess I will be like some others having paid 50% deposit via the group buy.

Speaking of restored faith, my chisels arrived in mid December but were ‘domestically impounded’ before becoming my Christmas gift, and what a gift they are....

Hi John,
Have you made contact with Trent in the last few months? The email on the website is active and is now being checked regularly. I suggest you touch base to reconnect and clarify things.
He is making in roads and I have faith he will make good. In time.
All the best
Kev

Email sent to Trent with the resultant reply that my Ultimax chisels are in the mix to be finished off very shortly. His reply intimated that I would have them in my hands without too much delay.
I can only hope that this time it will ring true.
I look at the set of mortise chisels I have from him the workmanship is just quality & a pleasure to use, this is why I have hung in here & not as once previously thought of forgoing my monies paid in lieu.
There at last sounds a degree of contentment amongst those of you who have had your chisels delivered .I expect you will all get years of continued satisfaction in having Trent's chisels to compliment your tool chest.Johnno

Anyone had any recent updates form Trent? I ordered a set from him back in November and haven't heard from him since I paid a deposit.
