Help. I need to know the name of a tool
Hello. I am from Norway so excuse my bad english. I have and L-shaped tool with and square socket 10 mm in one end and just the square (like a bit in the other end 10 mm to. So one end will fit in the other. It,s made in brass and i use it to open electrical cabinets in train where i work. This brass material is really weak and i,m trying to find something like this in other material. Someone have a clue what the name of something like this is in english?? Hope to get some answers here

Hi Stinemo,
What I think you are looking for is called an "enclosure key" generally they are unique to a particular enclosure manufacturer, so you need to know who made the enclosure. Rittal make a so-called universal enclosure key, but it might not fit what you are trying to open

Hi Stinemo,
That's what I guessed, you need to look for "enclosure key" for that particular maker.

Hi Stinemo
Food for thought - you might be able to make one. Find a piece of steel rod the outside diameter of the socket. Drill a hole in the end the diameter of the distance across the flats, then file it square. Grind/file the other end to shape. bend (with heat?) to get the right angle.

G'day people, Stinemo,
This reminds me of a Key used by Railway Employees, for Doors etc.
Stinemo, is the Square Female section Tapered or does it have Parallel Sides?

Tapered male end reminds me of what I used to use to open the spare wheel hatch on the old EK van.

Here's a couple of places you could try and get another one
Fire hydrant cabinet manufacturers. It also looks remarkably like the key I have to open some fire hydrant cabinets...
You could also try an old bus company, especially one that either has or had Leyland Atlantian Double decker buses its looks like the same size key used to open the cupboard under the stairs and other various cubbyholesRgds

The tool was called a "Carriage Key". It has differing names now "Quad Panel Latch" key, Cam Latch and Key, Cam Lock Latch and key, Cabinet Latch Key. Generally I think that the latches are referred to as Keyless Locks or Latches. Usually they are made from a zinc alloy.
Pudsey Diamond in England (http://www.pudseydiamond.com) manufacture similay keys (http://www.pudseydiamond.com/PDF%20-%20Keys.pdf). I would expect that armed with this knowledge a local locksmith could point you in the right direction if they did not sell them.

ps: Pudsey Diamond Part Numbers 6005 and 6061 (if the correct diameter) look like the ones you use. #6061 is for a 1/2" or 13mm square (across the face).Last edited by prozac; 1st August 2008 at 07:01 PM. Reason: Additional info.
