HELP! Must have more planes!
Made a big mistake this morning!
I bought The Handplane Book by Garrett Hack. BIG Mistake!!
I've been thumbing through it for a couple of hours and I've come to the realisation that I don't have enough handplanes. I've only got 12 and they're all different. But there are millions out there! Millions! And some of them are really odd. I mean, there's a thing called a spill plane and it's function is just to cut a curly shaving. That's all. It doesn't do anything else. There's another one called a chair devil and a plane designed to make wooden shoe-pegs!
Gotta get some of these these things! But first, I'm going to need more space. Now, how do I persuade the wife that she can't live without a set of little tiny shoe-pegs and some curly wood shavings? That chair in the corner clearly needs to be devilled. . .
Don't be put off by the ravings of a fanatic. It's a great book. The Handplane Book - by Garrett Hack. Buy it - read it. Highly recommended.
And, if anyone spots a chair devil - lemme know.

I kinda know that feeling
For anyone interested, the Handplane Book is packaged with Classic Hand Tools on Amazon for US$27.17 - it's $60 by itself here. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...=1O2V2DMFP5XZ9
I also found another set that gets rave reviews - The Workshop Book, The Workbench Book, and The Toolbox Book for US$40.77
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...=1O2V2DMFP5XZ9
Even with US$6.99 for shipping they're cheap. The Handplane Book and The Workbench Book are both supposed to be absolute classics.
BTW - I just ordered the Workshop set, so if anyone wants to order it in the next week, send me an email and I'll send you the 10% Amazon discount coupon.Last edited by DarrylF; 23rd April 2004 at 11:16 PM.

Col, Darryl
I am afraid it is a curse that is following you guys around. When I viewed this post there was only one add and it was for Lie-nelson planes.
Don't fight it gents just go and satisfy your cravingsCheers,
Rod

Oh Col, oh oh oh oh!
Now you've done it. Sliding further and further down the slippery slope.
Repeat after me, "My name is Col and I collect hand planes..." Either a 12-step programme for you, or you can join me in glorious denial (I don't have a problem collecting tools).
Yes, I have those books. And here is another: Michael Dunbar's "Restoring, Tuning & Using Classic Woodworking Tools".
Regards
Derek

 Problem? What problem? I don't have a problem!
(If I can persuade one of the kids to park out on the road that'll make enough room for an extra car on the driveway which means I can fit another big storage cupboard in the garage. Then I'll have room for some more planes! See! - problem solved!).

Driver,
You are quite normal apart from only having 12.
I agree, it is a good book and his book on handtools is also excellent reading.
