Repacement split nuts for saws
I may have come across a source of replacement split studs for when one has lost a the male stud to your saw handle. My source is from the plumbing trade particular old hot and cold taps that may be thrown out.
I happened to be rummaging through some old chrome plated hot and cold tapes when I noticed that the stud that holds the actual handle on can be converted into a suitable saw handle stud. The tap handle stud has a hex plate about 16mm diam with a 3/16th inch threaded stud attached. The plate will have some type of ceramic insert with the letters H or C engraved. It is only a matter of a bit of work on the grinder to grind off the letters etc until you get back into the actual base metal below, a bit of further grinding and filling etc and you end up with a replacement brass male stud suitable for replacing that lost stud.
Some types of the H & C handle studs come with out a stem and are threaded to take a separate stud, these may be suitable to making into the female nut for the saw handle. I have not checked this out yet but may be worth further investigation.
If you have any old brass hot and cold tap handles around check them out they may come in handy.
Cheers
Mac

Thanks for the tip Mac. I had been looking at the brass part of outdoor taps that hold the leather washer but have not got any further yet. I made split nuts out of some round bar and allthread. Cut a slice of bar then drill, tap and solder as per the how too on the norse woodsmith site. I am always on the lookout for anything brass that can be used.

John

I have a bunch of brass spit nuts I picked up from RayG that are extra to my needs. I have 1/2" and 9/16". I went a little crazy and got enough for 20 saws.

Thumbsucker,
I am willing to take some off your hands.

I got the split nuts through Bitlong order, so I paid $5 per split nut. So that is what I am asking.
I have at least 12 at 1/2" and 12 more 9/16".
