Can you identify this saw?
My lovely wife brought this home today from the markets. It needs a bit of a clean up and a sharpen, but what do you expect for $5.
I'm certainly no collector or anything, but I would love to know a little bit more about it.
Can anyone identify the markings on it?
Thanks in advance.Cheers.
Vernon.

Hi Vernon,
I have seen that makers mark before, but a brief search hasn't jogged the memory..
Maybe if Pedder is around he will know it straight away.
It reminds me a bit of August Krumm & Sons I will look more thoroughly a bit later..

Ray

Vernon, what you have is extremely rare! I would not tell too many forumites least they all desire one. A wife like yours is indeed something we would all wish for.

Cant help with the brand but it is well worth cleaning and sharpening. Will be a good user and perhaps even a collector. See what those in the know say.

Thanks Ray, I appreciate your efforts.
Prozac - she certainly is a rare find. I am very lucky and have no intention of getting rid of her so .
John - my intention was for it to be a user (regardless of it's "collectibility"), so it will certainly get the full treatment prior to being put into service.
Any more info greatly appreciated.Cheers.
Vernon.

Hi Vernon,
I drew a blank, but I am sure I've seen that style of crown before, Pedder sent me an email, but sorry, he didn't recognize it.
So I will email Wolfgang Jordan, he has the best site for German Hand Tools. http://www.holzwerken.de/museum/index.phtml
The one I was thinking of is this one.. the crown has an oval of small circles surrounding it.
http://www.holzwerken.de/museum/hers...ge.phtml#krumm
But, despite the similarities I don't think that's the one.

Thanks Ray.
That one in the link is certainly similar - could it be the same maker, but using a different style mark?
I spent a little time last night cleaning some of the rust off the blade. I was thinking about removing the handle (to make cleaning easier and to sand and re-coat the handle), but it appears that the fasteners are rivet type things, that are one use only.
Does anyone know where you can get replacement nut/screw thingamajigs?Cheers.
Vernon.

Hi Vernon,
I got an email reply back from Wolfgang, he doesn't recognize the mark either, when you get it cleaned up, maybe see if you can get a clearer picture of the etch.

Hi Ray,
Unfortunately, what you see in the original picture is it. The rest of the etch has been obliterated by pitting and/or wear. I've looked for other markings on the saw, but can't find anything. Maybe it's maker is destined to be a mystery.
Thanks again.Cheers.
Vernon.

Well this weekend I decided to make a new handle for the little saw. The original handle, while still serviceable was a little small for my hand.
I had a small amount of (what I am told is) Bull Oak - unfortunately the best looking bit (grain wise) had a lot of cracks through it.
Well the pics tell the story. I put some BLO on the finished handle. I still need to locate some split nuts - does anyone know a good source for these?
I also need to finish cleaning up the blade - I think I'll also put a fined pitch on the blade while I'm at it.Cheers.
Vernon.

I don't know about finding split nuts, but the Tool Exchange sells saw screws, seemingly reclaimed from old saws. Not sure about finding brand new ones... http://www.toolexchange.com.au/Stanl...%20Tools-4.htm

Hi Vernonv
Nice work, looks much better than the original,
I would have said that's she-oak by the look of it.
Which reminds me of the old joke, how do you tell the difference between she-oak and bull oak? ................
Answer, you look at the nuts.
Talking of nuts, (split variety) Mike Wenzloff sells them, http://www.wenzloffandsons.com
but I don't think they are listed on the web page, just send Mike an email. (or a PM, he sometimes comes around this way)
Then there's these guys...
http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/(duzgyn452jeix35543sgjx55)/ProductDetails.aspx?SKU=20066
And TFWW sells them as well, see..
http://www.toolsforworkingwood.com/M...Category_Code=
Or you can make them yourself, with some brass rod and 3/16 threaded brass rod.
Or.... final option, salvage them off old saws, some ebay sellers sell split nuts by themselves.

Ha! Reminds me of constantly being asked as a kid by that "only at christmas" uncle how to tell the age of a cat??
look up his date!
Vernon. if you have no luck with split nuts I'm sure I have a couple of brass saw screws floating around that would be happy to make the journey to nsw.
They'd most likely be from a dead Disston.Best regards, Luban

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I never really thought about making them myself, but the idea is appealing to me. It will just depend on if I can source some brass locally. Failing that I may look further afield or maybe take Luban up on his generous offer.
Cheers.
Vernon.

Here is the saw finished with nuts from Ray's group buy. It's done, other than a sharpen. I'm very happy with the final product.
Cheers.
Vernon.
