    Default Inheritance- more planes

    My FIL passed away in July and this weekend we went North to have a family gathering and distribute family heirlooms and other items.

    He had left me three planes which is surprising as I had never seen him working with wood.

    Plane 1. A Stanley 75 Rabbet Plane.

    Not very old by the look of it. Has a little superficial staining but apart from that looks the goods.

    Plane 2. I’ve never heard of this plane before. It’s a Pemuvar P44 Plough and Rebate plane.

    Lots of surface rust but not deeply etched. Might try the electrolysis method on the steel parts.
    Only came with a single rebate blade.

    Plane 3. Never been used, in the box, Record 06 Jointer.

    Some minor staining but should be easy to clean up.

    Nice, the Pemuvar 44 and the No 6
    should be good users, I have a 75 which is only used
    when I'm worried I might hit a nail. My first thoughts
    we're that the 44 was the same as a
    Record 044 but the blade depth adjustment
    looks different. Any chance of a close
    up pic of the 44?

    I've never bothered with a Stanley No.75 - I hear they make reasonable paper weights.

    The Pemuvar P44 is an Aussie version of the Record No.044, and should make a good user.
    Edit: The Pemuvar is not Australian - my memory has let me down . Thanks for the correction Lappa.

    That Record No.06ss is a beauty . I've gone out of my way to collect Record "stay-set" planes and I've never come across an early one like that in such good condition. The chrome/nickel plating on the lever-cap is usually the first thing to go. Yours looks unblemished. Treat it well. Could you kindly post some pictures of the frog (with cutters removed) so it can be better dated (currently 1931 to 1958)?

    I stand corrected. I tried to check my facts by visiting Alf's fabulous "Combi-plane Central" site, but it appears to be no longer supported and I couldn't find an archive copy.

    The blade clamp on the Pemuvar looks similar to that on the Record 044 (and 043). The adjustment lever looks quite coarse, but should work.

    That looks like a Type 3 ("Pattern #3") lateral lever, which narrows down the plane to 1945 - 1952. If your "stay set" cap-iron has a Patent No. stamped on it, that narrows it down to 1945 - 1947 (when the patent expired). If not then it's 1947 to 1952.

    I believe the late David Lynch's excellent recordhandplanes.com is also no longer supported, but here's a link that works Record Hand Tools (phew, got my facts right this time ).

    Are those frog screws nickel plated? If so, they're left-overs from Type 1 (pre-WW2).

    There’s no Patent No stamped on the cap-iron so it’s 1947-52. Thanks Vann.

    The Pemuvar is coming up a treat. I’ll post some pics of the cleaned item when it’s finished.

    Yes. Combi-plane Central; Record Hand Planes; Millers Falls site; Blood & Gore; Stanley Plane dating (preferably Rex Mill version); Georges Basement; etc.

    Maybe you could start a sticky. We could post sites and you could transfer sites to the first post - and maybe delete later posts?

    Lappa, you can post to the thread, so fire away. It is just a normal thread, the only difference being it doesn't filter down the page as activity ceases. I decided not to delete any posts (unless they are offensive, of course) and leave any discussion that ensues.

    My main objective when I suggested this was simply to provide the locations of some difficult-to-find sites about hand planes. As the interweb matures & ages (along with blokes interested in archaic things like hand tools! ), more & more sites are going to cease being actively supported and slip into archives, some of which will be easy to find, others increasingly tricky. However, the idea is already expanding beyond what I envisaged, which is ok, I think. As long as I keep the first post updated, it should remain a quick reference site that folks who aren't as deft with search engines as the ex-librarians & other clever folks amongst us can use to find what they want more easily.

    Gentle clean-up of the Pemuvar and a coating of wax. Some chrome has been lost but still came up a treat.

    I want ant to buy some blades for it but the only one that appear to be readily available are Veritas blades.

    Could someone with a Veritas Plow plane please measure the blade ( as per the picture below) and post the dimensions? Thanks

    Don't have a Veritas but I would have thought the smaller blades for older Stanleys or Records could be found online.
    If the B slot dimension in your pic is not big enough for the Pemuvar adjustment bar then it could be opened with a diamond file.

    Three 1/4 inch blades, top is a Stanley for a 45/55, B dimension approx. 2mm.

    Middle is for a Record 405, B dimension 2mm.

    Bottom is for a Stanley 13-050, B dimension 3mm.


    Or why not make your own from a bit of O1 tool steel?

    Edited to add that Veritas say their blades
    will fit Stanley 45 or Record 405 so the dimensions must be similar.
