Smile Kelly Dandenong Axe Advice Wanted

I was fortunate enough to pick up 12 old axes in excellent condition at an auction for around 20 bucks each recently (Hytest, Keesteel Hults, Kelly). Most I will sell on in due course, but I have started my own tool collection - quite a modest one at this stage - and I am keeping the occasional standout item I come across for myself.

I've learned to clean up axes quite effectively (and sympathetically I hasten to add), but there are certainly vast holes in my knowledge on the subject.

Getting to the Dandenong axe. Excellent condition as found; marked made in Australia and 4&1/2 pounds, not 2Kg. Appears far superior to other axes I have seen with those markings.

    • I assume the pounds weight identifies it as pre 1970. Are there ways to refine the date?
    • Is there a desirability hierarchy with place of manufacture and if so where does the Made in Australia version fit?
    • Does not have Cyclone or True Temper markings as I have seen on some Dandenong axes. Is this a positive or a negative?
    • I suspect its the original handle. If not it is an unusually expert refit.

If this one is just another Kelly Dandenong axe I will likely move it on. I don't have unlimited space available.

On the other hand, I have let a number of collectables go over the past couple of years which I now regret not keeping.

Any information which might help the decision would be much appreciated.

You might try asking on the The Australian Blade Forums, as I know a few people have restored K D Axes there.

They're as savvy about blades (inc. axes) as this forum is about most woodworking related activities. Which is saying quite a bit.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.
