Go for it Kats. Customs is only a worry if you go over about $400US in your order & have it sent by Air (Xpress). This is supposed to have changed recently to a value of $1,000AU. I order fairly regularly & have no trouble.
Don't use the UPS option - they take as long at the post & want to charge you at least an extra $60 when the parcel actuall arrives, on top of what you have already paid for shipping.

I've not had problems. Via post they get it here quicker than the locals. Excellent service, they offer different freight options and don't charge or ship until you confirm. Mine took 5 days in total to get here.

My understanding is that the threshold for escaping import duy and GST has (as Brslee says) been raised to $1000. However this applies regardless of the method of shipping, so it now doesnt matter whether it comes by post or air express. Also, note that the $1000 Aus threshold is Cval - or in other words not the purchase price but the total of purchase price plus shipping plus insurance plus any other costs. A lot of people get caught by this, apparently.
If in doubt, read this http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=5549, or better still ring Customs - I have found them to be very helpful.

To date, over 18 consignments, several just under $AU500, mostly less. No customs issues at all.
Some consignments have been opened - generally by AQIS, but no $penalties, etc
Cheers!
