Cool Lie Nielsen 4 1/2 Bronze Available

I see that Lie Nielsen Australia has an allocation of Bronze 4 1/2 smoothers available. A bit too rich for my blood at $1299- and not sure I wouldn't prefer an iron plane in that size but I still got excited despite having no real intention of buying one.

So how many of you have put an order in? How many are buying multiples to have a pristine one on the shelf and a user ?

    Cheers, Dom

Better get in quick if you want one - I just had a look on the site and there is now only one left! They went quick (not sure how many were available tho)! Anyone here fortunate enough to pick one up?

    Cheers,

    Hey Dom,
I could use one. Why don't you shout me, for Christmas?

You buy me one and I'll buy you one . Too late anyway. All sold out.

I really couldn't justify one tbh. Would rather get a bronze #3 for $750- less if I were going to get another plane.

I assume the appeal is predominantly due to the limited availability / collectability of these?

I think there may be some confusion with the 25th anniversary bronze #4-1/2.

The 25th "special" has a high angle (50 degrees?) frog, this one appears to have the standard 45 degree frog.
Still it will be a very very nice plane.

a bit like Dom I'm tossing up between the #3 and #2.

    Just some clarification here.

The #4 1/2 sold by LN in this offer was this ...

This is a common angle #4 1/2 smoother with Cherry knob and handle. This is the second time that LN have offered this particular plane. The last occasion was a few years ago (perhaps last year), and they had a small run then as well.

It is not to be confused with the bronze Anniversary plane, which was sold about 10 or so years ago. That #4 1/2 came with a 50 degree frog as standard, and Rosewood knob and handle. The lever cap was inscribed "Anniversary" with the dates, and the plane was signed by Thomas Lie-Nielsen. Each plane was a numbered, limited edition. I was told that the mold was destroyed after production. If so, the current run is a new batch.

I have one of the original Anniversary #4 1/2 planes. It gets used occasionally. A real beast! Heavy. I use it with a 45 degree frog and the chipbreaker. It performs very well. The 50 degree frog is too low for much of our local stuff, unless using the chipbreaker.

I also have the #3 in bronze, and managed to get Rosewood for this plane as well. The handle on my #3 is a slightly modified #4 for my large-ish hands.

Rosewood for the LN planes in now unobtainable (and illegal to ship outside N. America). Below is a photo of the two planes ....

Thanks Derek for posting that info.
Just one thing, I believe the 25th Anniversary #4-1/2s have Cocobolo handles, not Rosewood

Ian, I believe that you are correct. I kept thinking "is it Bubunga? Lee Valley used Bubinga, it's not that". Cocobolo did not come to mind.Of course it is a Rosewood as well! (Rosewoods Dalbergia nigra).

    Hi Derek,

You are right - it's not the same as the 25th Anniversary edition, and yet it's priced even higher than that was! They made it sound like this might be the last batch they make - although something tells me that may not be the case.

I picked up some cocobolo totes for my #4 recently, but decided I actually prefer the look of the cherry. Also the front and rear cocobolo totes look like they came from different boards and have very different colour which makes the plane look odd in real life.
