I've been using the rasps in anger a bit more lately, and like Claw Hama I keep discovering more and more uses for them, as they open up new options. They are one of those tools that you actually have to have in your hand to discover these uses.
Yesterday for example, I cut a rebate into a piece of MDF (part of the barn floor) and I had to enlarge it a little - a rasp was the tool of choice and it did a cracking job, quickly. I used a #10 Half-round (Cab. Maker would have been more appropriate) and the surface it left was immaculate. Rasping down to the line was just so easy and accurate.
TIP: because the teeth of the rasps are so sharp they can be difficult to clean. All you have to do is run it across a scrap of MDF to get rid of the proper wood chips and then use a soft brass brush or (finger) nail brush to easily clean the MDF powder off. The most effective method with the brush is to follow the diagonal line of teeth across the rasp, and then a couple of brushes down the length.
Quite seriously, if the budget allowed for it I would have well in excess of a dozen rasps in my arsenal. Yesterday I had call for a square rasp (for the corners of the rebate).
Very much looking forward to seeing the Handle Maker's package that we are developing - should be leaving France very soon with the second order.

I can think of occasions where I would like to know the radius of the round side of a rasp. This includes Cabinet Maker's, Half-Rounds, Modellers and Very Tapered. Indeed, it may influence how I design something.
The following formula works:
Radius = H/2 + W*W/8/H
where H is the height and W is the width.
For example, a 300mm Cab.Makers has
width of 34mm
height of 6.5mm
giving the round side a radius of 25.5mm.
That means if I only had a 50mm Forstner, but on this occasion I need a 2" (51mm) hole, then the Cab.Maker will be a really good fit to enlarge the hole.
Yup, I'm bored. Not really, it's useful. Isn't it?

Useful in your choice when you buy them. You could buy them almost in a set like fostner bits if you do a lot of hole enlaging and the like. When a round or half round doesn't have a large enough radius you tend to file coregations if you don't have good technique. Well done FF this will have bearing on my next purchase I would think.

Are they here yet, are they, are they??
Getting impatient so thought I'd make some handles for the saw files. Just quickies, nothing flash. Had a couple of brass ferrules on hand. This my standard shape I make all my file handles althoughI have been slowly making the thumb groove/hilt deeper over time. I hate the feeling your hand may slip, this way you have a good positive push point.

A good question Claw Hama. To which the answer is.....
YES!
They arrives today (Rasps for orders, rasps for handle making tests, saw files, and a couple of Engineer's & Milled files that have been Sapphire coated for testing. What didn't come were small Saw Files Sapphire coated. There was some mix-up in communication (possibly this end). I have to think through the most efficient way around this while I get some sent out. The bugger is that they'll have to go off for coating which can take up to a couple of weeks.
These are the Handle Maker's package (Curved Ratty #12g, 3x Curved Half-Rounds (#9-15g), Curved Flat #14g).
I used them this afternoon to make a hold-down for the vac tube in my saw table. I JUST LOVE THESE RASPS!! I keep on finding new uses for them all the time. The hold-down (below) had the majority of wasts removed by hand-saw and forstner, and then rasping to a line was so easy and accurate. Damned efficient to - it's very easy to take off more than desired. You have to make sure that you leave enough waste to rasp even with a #14. I used 4 different rasps for shaping this:
I'll get the ordered rasps & files in the mail tomorrow. Testing rasps & files maybe tomorrow.

The third order arrived today (in record time) and I have done some despatching. Noel also sent me the result of a little project that we've been working on - more news soon with some pics.
32 Liogier files have been sent on a journey around the country to go through 9 pairs of very talented hands for assessment. I had some of the files coated to see if that's worthwhile for them as well. I should have some more news on this in a couple of weeks, or thereabouts.
In keeping with European tradition, Noel has has a January price rise of 2.8%. This doesn't affect us too much because the A$ has strengthened considerably in the last few months.
However, the 3rd party who applies the Sapphire coating have gone beserk. The prices of the Sapphire rasps have risen 13% (for the whole rasp!) which translates to a 45% increase in the coating price! Staggering! This is beyond Noel's control of course, and so we just have to live with it. He suspects that they may have applied a PITA factor to him because he is their teeniest weeniest cu$tomer, but at the same time is their most finicky (as we would hope he is). The coating is still economically worthwhile as far as I'm concerned.
