Default LN Event 2011 Mittagong Report

This is the 2nd LN Event, the first was late last year in Brisbane. Sturt Wood School at Mittagong is a beautiful location, and worth a visit at any time. The demonstrators were:
LN of course with a big mobile display, I caught David at the end of day 1, the only time when there was an unobstructed view of the display - the bench was to the left and is only partially visible. The stand was usually busy,

Colin Clenton with his world class squares and awls, also had a great little shave horse (sorry no picture), but no drawknife - Colin will bring one next time,

Michael Connar with his shooting boards, very sharp planes, and beautiful small bench with his new vises, featuring wheels, rather than handles - very slick but unfortunately no close-up picture,

and Terry Gordon, with a wide range of planes - and giving a lot of good advice to attendees. He and Michael seemed to be competing on the finest plane shaving

Trent Powie had his full range of chisels on display, and it is easy to see why he has a waiting list,

Chris Vesper had his full range of squares, bevels, gauges, knives and a pair of beautiful magnifiers made by a colleague,

and Stuart Faulkner, Director of Sturt, was there, providing information about the school - and demonstrating his jigs for sharpening cabinet scrapers; hopefully, using these, anyone can sharpen a scraper - although, if you can make the jigs, you may not need them,

Naturally TTTG was there answering questions, examining the odd tool brought in, and demonstrating how wooden planes of all kinds were used; there was the odd metal plane as well; here are Mike and Darcy with a visitor grasping a wooden plane. Good to see some members there, and acquaint visitors with what TTTG does, our workshops, and of course the Tool Sale on 13th March - The Traditional Tools Group (Inc.) -- Coming Events

There were demonstrations on using hand tools, and whilst I only had a short time to check these out, they were popular, here is a photo of the cutting joints demo,

and the Friends of Sturt were there catering to the inner man, woman, and child - there were a lot of children with parents, and some very interested in trying out a wooden plane,

There was a steady stream of people over the 2 days, rarely crowded, and both demonstrators and attendees appeared to enjoy themselves; certainly the demonstrators indicated they would be back next year, and the event was a success for them. Hard to estimate the numbers - a few hundred is pretty close!

The relaxed nature of the event, and the interested crowd makes for a good event, I am sure next year will be even better; the advertising was very late and many people would not have known it was on, or had made alternative arrangements for the weekend. Sturt are very enthusiastic about the event, and put on a terrific venue.

Interestingly a picture of a US event was posted today on Ron Hock's blog suggesting that the US events are very similar, albeit on a slightly larger scale, his blog is:
We’ll be at the L-N Event this Weekend… « The Sharpening Blog

I look forward to seeing everyone at the next (close to) Sydney event in a year's time.
