    Default Maker of Saws

I am interested in having a saw made.

Are there any makers of hand saws in Australia? I can't seem to find any.

    Cheers,
    Art

Why do you want to have a saw made?

    What sort of saw?

AFAIK there are no manufacturers of hand saws in Australia.

I want to have replica 15th C tools made and I was particularly taken with this saw (bottom right).

As I am not hugely confident working with metal, I thought I might try and see if someone might be able to do it for me.

If it comes down to it (and I can find the right steel) I may have to do it myself.

I thought I would try here first though.

I would get an old panel saw and use the steel from that. Trace the shape onto the steel and cut it out with a Dremel. Then file the teeth and add a handle.

    Wink

I'm sure Bunnings had those saws in the throw-out bins for $9.95 ...

    Very very interesting Art,

That ,if I'm not mistaken is a depiction of the building of the Ark in a Book of hours (written by a frenchman in the 15thC). So, the saw may be depiction of a 15th Century French tool, or is it a tool from the time?

It's amazing what a google search can tell you.

Given it's curvature, I'm not sure what it would be used for but the picture clearly shows a crosscut. Personally, I'd find some books on medieval or biblical tools and contact the authors. They might be able to give you clues on the details of construction of these tools such as materials, (if it's from the time of the Ark the the metals may well be very differetn from 15thC).
    Cheers,

    Adam

I'd steer clear of it if I were you. By the looks of this bloke, he's already cut his left leg judging by the colour of his blood-stained hose. Either that or he has absolutely no idea of artisan fashion.

heh heh. Well I thought that parti-coloured hose were more for 'best', but then again he does have commision for a God so maybe he has his best duds on.

Yes, it's from the Bedfordshire Book of Hours IIRC. Anyway, medieval manuscript painters frequently painted biblical scenes with moern tools so the saw is likely to be 15th.

Now I did consider Bunnings, and had a look at their saws, but the pruning saws have the teeth on the wrong side despite having a similar shape and they are rather small as the image depicts a fairly large pull saw.

Lost his right boot, too, by the look of it.
Or maybe he was just hurrying too much to finish dressing this morning. Rain started falling already........

I don't think it's a pull-saw. The curve is going the wrong way: if you tried to cut while pulling this thing you'd be pulling the teeth away from the wood surface.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Hmmm... interesting. I had been informed previously that the vast majority of medieval saws were pull saws.

I shall have to look into it a little more.

Came across this today in the Woodworking pics archives, search for Homemade tool kit, and give the writer a bell. I think he might just be able to help you.

Ah then my plan to acquire some Viking age woodworking tools based on the Mastermyr tool chest and make medieval shovels, spades, pole lathes may be perceived to be a little bit on the odd side?
