My manual is done
Finally, after the 'couple of weeks' that I promised has stretched out to 3 months, I've finished my 'manual' on laminating & dovetailing metal planes. It's grown into a much weightier "tome" than I first envisaged, but that's what happens when you try to cover all the bases. I've broken it into 4 separate pdfs. The sizes are: 6, 2.5, 5, & 3 Mb respectively. If you'd like to have a copy, I think the best bet would be for forum members who are truly interested to click on my avatar and send me an email and I can "post" the pdfs to you that way. Since everyone is now on the super-fast NBN (well, a few are ) you should be able to cope easily with the files, but if you have a mailbox service that limits what you can receive, I might have to get more creative....
To keep the file size down I cut the pictures back to a reasonable publishing quality. You can enlarge most of them quite a bit if necessary, but if there are any that you want bigger but pixelate out, let me know & I'll try to fix them in the "2nd edition".
Any comments, criticisms, corrections, welcomed. I offer this not as an expert maker like a Holtey et al, but as an enthusiastic amateur who has made a goodly number of mistakes, and maybe what I've written will encourage others to have a go, and avoid the pitfalls, or at least some of them. I've edited it at least twice, but I'm sure there are still typos, and some parts may not be as clear as they should be, so I'll let it sit for a few months before I saddle up for the second edition!
Cheers,IW

To make it easier to find things, I made up a table of contents, it's only a little file so I'll attach it to this post. You should be able to find anything you are looking for pretty easily.
I was going to do an index, but decided that was far too much effort for a sluggish brain in such hot weather........

It's winging its way to you as I type, Paul.
You get the first version that has benefited from some skilful editing by Bob (l@brat), for which I'm much obliged. For those who got vers1.0, the errors aren't major, I'm sure you'll work it out. However, if anyone has any problems or sees major flaws, let me know & I'll fix them for vers1.2.

Ian
At this stage I have only opened page one, but I have seen enough to know that I am sold on it and saved it on both my work computer (night shift can be tedious without some light relief) and home computer. What have you done sending such a source to me with my addictive nature?
Never mind, I love it. I see a new family arriving.
Thanks

G'day Ian.
Not wanting to appear impatient, I know from first hand experience how busy we retirees are, but did you get my email.

Thanks Ian, that's a great resource. You have put a lot of time into its preparation. Up until a few years ago when I started reading your posts I didn't even realise that I wanted to build a plane, let alone think that I could. You are actively pushing your addiction onto an unsuspecting audience. A shoulder plane is now in the planning and I'm blaming you for it.

Hi David, "manual" sent.
By all means post a pic and a description of your rebate plane - the more folks who show their work, the more we'll encourage the lurkers to have a crack at it.
I've seen the Veritas kit used in a couple of ways other than the simple "Krenov" style they illustrate in the instructions that come with the kit, and I used the kit I originally put together for the AWR review in a metal body. Maybe we need a thread on "101 uses for a Veritas plane kit"..
I think the kits are a good way to get into plane-making, they make it seem more achievable and it's hard not to end up with a plane that works, even if it doesn't work brilliantly on your first try. Whether you follow the instructions or go your own way, you've got good basic bits to work with. There are a coupe of ways I think they could improve the kit, like offering a "deluxe" version with a chip-breaker, for e.g.. They could also make the thumbscrew for the lever-cap about 5mm longer; a coupe of other makers on another forum have also noted that the screw is barely adequate - it limits the style of lever cap you can make. I had the cheek to 'advise' LV on ways they could do better after I made the review plane - got a polite letter back from customer service, but no promises!
Cheers,IW
