Thanks Harrison If you can drag yourself out of bed in time to get to the Camberwell Sunday market (get there 7:30ish?) there is almost always a piece of hand plane gold hidden away somewhere with a stupidly low price tag on it. If I was in Melbourne I'd be there (strong coffee in hand) every Sunday.. the trick is to look scan all the unlikely looking stalls, look in the boxes of junk under the tables.. the cheap gold is always cheap because the seller is more interested in something else and throws dirty old tools to the side.

Next up is the plane that I made a b-line for when I first went and looked at Tony's Museum and it's the plane I rushed off to beg him to put on hold for me when I heard that he was liquidating a big chunk of his (awesome) collection.
It's a user made shooting plane of unknown origin. It was found by Tony in Daylesford Vic and has had a new blade made for it since.
It's really not the sort of thing that I would usually take home. I'm not a shelf collector and I have this stupid rule of only keeping tools that I use but something about this old thing grabbed me and I had to have it I do get a bit hot under the collar for interesting one offs like this.
I don't know how I feel about using it yet (I do need a shooting solution) I will at the very least straighten up the blade, make a board for it and try it out. Maybe if it's as effective as it looks I'll make my own version of it and sell it on to somebody who isn't going to wear it out.

The Plane is 18" long. Laminated down the middle. The board will need to have a groove plowed into the runner to allow for the lateral adjustment screw on the right. I can only assume that these screws were added by the maker as an after thought after having a hard time keeping the blade in check.

    Love the Wedge

Beautiful Planes Luban, I really like the V&B symbol too. And love the shooting plane. So much time and thought went into that thing... Reckon I would have liked to have that one around too... It'd be a cool talking point!!

    Way cool Luban!
What do you think is the timber used in the shooting board plane. Looks beautiful like old mahogany.

    Hi Dane
There really is something nice about the V&B, I'll scan the advert and post it here when I get the chance, apparently Epson scanner/printers wont scan when there they are out of ink.. Great Work Epson
A good mate instantly thought of VB beer when he saw them but it didn't even occur to me maybe I don't drink enough?

Looking at it again today I have this awful feeling that I'm going to have to put up a shelf in the house for it.. Why do I get the feeling that there is a second freshly oiled slope just around the bend

Not 100% on the timber. The beast weighs 3kg with the blade and my initial thought was jarrah but I'll pop over the road to my friendly local Arborist later today and get his expert opinion. Will report back.
    Best regards, Luban

I've been intrigued by Luban's Plane and am fascinated by its craftsmanship and ingenuity. Great find Luban.
My find is very pedestrian by comparison.
It is of European origin probably German.
Just another German woodie from the looks.
Looks like beech body with a laminated sole of a different wood - not sure what.
The plane shows all the hallmarks of cheap mass production, and yet it has some little touches that look like real quality.
The front horn looks rough and a so-so fit, and while the rear hand grip is a smooth shape outside, the internal fitting is - well - done in a hurry.
The throat is nicely formed and the wedge has a lovely shape to the throated part.
The blade looks, at first blush to be a cheap lump of steel, but - hello it has been hollow ground.
I will have a better impression of this as a user after I sharpen the blade and see to the base.
In the meantime, this plane is an unknown brand to me and a mix of very good and very ordinary.
    Bit of a puzzle really.
Anyone ever heard of the brand FAMOS?
Hmmm .......more later after I tune it up.
    Cheers

Hi to all at the Telepoint Plane Collectors Anonymous annual meeting...

    Try Wolfgang Jordan's site...
Deutsche Werkzeughersteller und -händler: Famos KG, Laupheim

You can use google to give a rough translation..

Wolfgang sometimes visits here, so maybe he can add a bit more info.

Hornbeam was/is used for soles on some Euro woodies AFAIK.

The link to Wolfgang's site is useful - gratias.
I think from the configuration of this plane that it will perform well and am keen to give it a go. I'll get back to you on that.
Can't do it now, I'm off to the markets - (to buy bananas) heh heh!

Well, it's not Monday, but the gods are smiling and the sun is out....

I have been slowly building up bits and pieces for a spot of blacksmithing, and the latest piece of the puzzle has been acquired.

I paid more than what I was intending to have to pay, but imagine the surprise when this one turned up on ebay, and the seller was just down the road! (saved a bundle on time and travel!) It's a 5" leg vise, weighs around 70 pounds or so, missing a spring (easily made) and the leg has a slight bend (easily straightened). The threads are good, and the jaws reasonable.

These sort of things never turn up within stone throwing distance, so the gods are smiling indeed, as am I.

    Ray

    Very nice. Good score.

May we ask what the smithing will be aimed at?

I fancy heating things up red hot and whacking away with a hammer, fun enough in itself surely...

Actually, I am planning to make some more holdfasts, (hopefully ones that work this time!, previous efforts have been a bit mixed) and some hardware bits and pieces, hinges, drawer pulls and such. I have ambitions to make a few basic tools, the first thing that everyone makes is a set of tongs.. But if pressed for a definitive answer I would probably just try some kind of diversionary tactic.... dunno, really seemed like a good idea at the time.. one of those things I have always wanted to try my hand at.

    Regards
    Ray
