    Hello mate.

No, probably not. I work most weekends. Bummer having to earn money to eat etc.

Have just come in after an evening of cleaning an old no-name saw. Not the most attractive saw but I think it'll sharpen up to a good user. 9pt approx 20" long.

Am just short of head spinning from the fumes of lamp oil. Must get some more SImple Green one day. Had the fan on but it was bloody cold and didn't seem to make much difference so I switched it off. Hydrocarbons can't be that bad can they?

    Cheers,
    Virg.

Bought a Chesterman leather, brass and steel tape measure, just like this one:

NMAH | Surveying & Geodesy | Tape (Chesterman)

Does anyone have an estimate of its age? I notice the Smithsonian doesn't give an estimated date. My guess is late 19th to early 20th century.

    Regards,

    Tim

"W. & L. E. Gurley offered Chesterman steel tapes as early as 1871, describing them as "made of a thin ribbon of steel, which is jointed at intervals, and wound up in a leathern case, having a folding handle." Gurley went on to say that these tapes were the best on the market, but at $17, their "great cost" prevented their general use. Gurley also sold Chesterman tapes of cloth reinforced with wire; these cost but $5.25."

You don't know when you've got it good, do ya?

This was purchased at the Sydney tool sale on the 9th of September.

Only now did I actually get a change to upload the photo. I have already used the hand drill.

Not sure, way too much rust at the moment.

Just needed something to play with to get an understanding of how hard or easy these are to use.

They're very easy to use. It's mastering them that's hard.

The US National Bureau of Economic Research site shows that in 1870 that a US carpenter earned $3 a day. More than a weeks' work for a tape measure would make you think twice before buying one.

And to top it off Led Zepplin Black dog on the Markets PA. Ahh Life early on a sunny Sunday morning, it dont get much better than this.
