No4 plane loose handle repair
I spotted this for sale on Gumtree and couldn't believe what was done to repair the loose handle. (the asking price was $60)

Nice. But a big pan head screw (preferably welded on so it won't come loose) would have been better. Worth $70 then.

For a working plane provided the screw head is countersunk enough not to mark the wood then it's a valid repair. As to the planes value that is up to the buyer to judge. It would be irksome if a repair like that was a kept secret from a buyer.

I wouldn't pay anything for it though.

Thanks for the heads up Warrick, looks like I might be sitting on a fortune!
From my late grandfather's collection. He lived through 2 world wars and the great depression so nothing went to waste. In fact one wonders are far 'gone' something had to be before it was gone!
Plane number 1, the lug for the hold down screw had broken off hence the idea to come from below. Also judging from the serious repair at the front the nose of the plane had been broken off plus the front handle has a pin that goes all the way through the base.

Plane number 2, not one screw from below but 2. Also some serious repair to one side of the plane where a large piece has been welded (brazed?) back into place.

I think they are great, especially that little one with the front stuck back on
someone has gone to a lot of effort to keep using them.
Thats a story.____________________________
