    Default Olive

My good friend Ian (IanW) surprised me with a couple of pieces of olive wood.

It turned easily for such hard wood, and hardly needed any finish ..

Derek - I suspected a marking knife or two might be lurking in that wood!

It looks like you selected a relatively straight piece for this knife handle. There were some pretty wild-looking areas on the thinner piece, which might be a bit more testing, but a very sharp skew & light cuts usually gets you there ...

The oily wood certainly finishes to a delightfully tactile surface. I usually use a bit of 0000 steel wool to buff it (& the brass) up before applying a lick of Shellawax. Over time, the pale colour darkens a bit, so it doesn't hold that really sharp contrast of the chocolate lines, but it still looks good.

I can't understand why Olive isn't more sought-after as a handle wood - it's in the same league as box in this application, I reckon, easy as pie to turn, & takes pounding at least as well. There will be a fair bit of it around in a few years from all the plantings that have gone on around the country. I believe it's gone feral & is a declared weed in S.A.?

    Have fun,
    IW

The more I see of Olive Wood the more I like it. We've got a dozen or so trees planted - but I'll have to wait a few years to "harvest" them.

Yeah, Bob - the tree this wood came from was around 30 years old, but it did have pretty good growing conditions. It got its toes into the septic system! If you can arrange something like that, you may not have to wait as long........

    Cheers,
