My half set of 4 arrived with some lovely blackwood handles. Wonderful looking tools all round.
I hope to put them together on Friday and post some pics in the other thread once I've ground the bevel on the odd one out, oiled the handles and put them together.
Thanks to TS and DJ in particular along with the many formites who have helped along the way.
All the best
Kevin
PS I'm looking forward to my long set in a few months time

DJ,
Mine arrived this morning and look magnificent! A huge vote of thanks to you and TS for making this happen. I agree with the others, the quality is excellent. Definitely tools that will be around in my shop for a long time.

Glenlara, Dj, only sent one, he must have gotten confused as you were first only down for one, and then did not realise that the other two were also for you. However that is OK, as soon as the spare chisels come to me in Canberra I will send you your two. Give me about a week.

No problems. All the way to lightning ridge and in to the gold coast I was looking for wood to make handles out off on the side of the road.

Canberra Chisels Have Arrived
Good News the box of chisels for the Canberra blokes came today. Having had a cursory chance to examine the chisels, I must confess that I am impressed. The chisels are flat, even the long thin 3 mm are nice, and true, these had me worried. The side landings are clean, and consistent. The finish of the surface grind is on par with Lie-Nielsen's.
My only quibbles is the socket/ferrules seem to be a little over engineered. The x-wall thickness could be made thinner, giving more meat to the handle. However the weight of the socket does shift the centre of gravity of the chisel towards the centre, so it maybe a good thing. Also I will note that the surface finish on the grind for the side bevels, could be better. Its just not bling as it could be.
The handles turned out very comfortable, and nicely sized, with the fat of the bulge sitting comfortably into the palm, with the finger extending towards the socket. The socked does sit loose, however it should not affect the operation of the chisel.
I had a go at pairing with a blunt long 250 mm 3 mm wide chisel. It is simple a matter of holding the chisel correctly. All that is needs to be done is to hold the front of the chisel with your non-dominant hand as close to the front of the chisel blade as you can. If you nibble of as little as possible at a time, the chisel is more then functional, with minimum distortion. Remember that the 3 mm chisel is for the finest of fine work, and will serve you will for this task. If you want to hog away material you may have to consider other chisel options.
I welcome feedback and comments from chisel recipients. If you think something could be better, I would like to know. I know I will have thoughts on how they could be made better, as time goes on.
All that has to happen now is to make another batch to replace the 11 lost, and the six destroyed during the heat treat. So it looks like we will be doing a partial chisels batch order, consisting of at least four sets, plus six long 12 mm chisels. I will also make spares just incase we have anymore duds, second time around.
In the mean time, its time to go to the Wig & Pen. I know its short notice but how does this Saturday Sound????? I will be at the Canberra Wood Show this Sunday at the ANU Stand in the morning, and drifting around the show the rest of the day.
Below is a photo of what came to me.
