    Greetings Rhykenologists,

Looks like it might be to cut a sliding dovetail.
    Cheers

OK Jeremy - yes you could be right.
Perhaps used in its side as in pic 1 and 2, it cuts the tail, and upright the plane smooths the bottom of the dovetail socket.
The all in one dovetail plane then.

I think a Matheson designed this after Hogmanay - its way of spreading the confusion

I would just have a go on a bit of wood with it and see what it does.

    Hi Tom.

What a bizarre plane.. but what a great find
It looks home made and from the way the screws on the brass plate have been cut through to make one of the mouths? (what is that silver U shape in the first photo? a slitter?) it looks to me like somebody was making it up as they went?
Somebody's answer to a repeatable and finely adjustable groove (T-slot?) obviously whatever the cut was it was required enough to drive somebody to spend a sleepless night putting your plane together to make the job easier.

I'm sure somebody will come in and prove me wrong soon
    Best regards, Luban

I rather like Patrick's description of a "collision of porcupine and wood plane"
